Well it's finally home. It was a long drive, but always so nice to see the cape. It was already in the driveway when I pulled up, an old sea-dog (or pirate) was the proprietor.
So after we sang a few sea shanties, he and his grandson, (or boy?) helped me load it on to the truck. He sure was gushing about the condition of the KDS-58. "Only used on Thanksgiving and Christmas, it's virtually new!" The way he went on, it was sounding like a sales pitch. I have to say, it does look minty. Clean inside and out. The butcher block top has some marks on it, but nothing that can't be sanded out. There are some detergent stains, but apparently those can be cleaned off. Anyway, be posting pictures in a bit. Oh did I mention it was FREE?
Thanks again Phil!
P.S. This is the second KDS I've gotten from Cape Cod. Whats up with that?

While switching the upper rack from the KDS-19C to the KDS-58 I discovered a small piece of the China Guard had been broken off from the KDS-19C rack. Not too noticeable. Also, the upper rack is in better condition than the one one the 58. The tines are immaculate.

Did a bit of a switcharoo with the KDS-58 butcher block top. I had a base cabinet that I was discarding but the top was in great condition, and it of course matched the rest of the counter tops. As luck would have it, it was the perfect size for the '58. Even though it's a portable, it will be installed permanently where the Maytag 107 currently is. So now the KDS-58 will have a "built-in" look.

While draining from prewash, a high pitched whine started and water started to leak from under the KitchenAid. I immediately hit drain and cancel and the noise and leak stopped once the machine turned off. HOWEVER when I turned it on again the same high pitched whine came back. I haven't looked yet where the leak is coming from, but the whine seems to be coming from the water pump. Am I looking at a new pump for the KDS-58? |

Hi Louis the lower front panel removes with a couple of #2 Phillips head screws under the lower edge of it, take off the panel and run a R-N-H and see where its leaking.
A leaking main seal is certainly a possibility, you might have also gotten a foreign object caught in the drain impeller making the high pitched noise.
On KAs like this you disassemble the pumps and fix, there is no replacing a drain pump, unless you replace the entire main motor and pumps.
Let us know what you find, John L. |

Yes, I know, the G.E. is waiting, but I need to do some appliance shifting, so this has taken priority. I ran the 58 and this time no screeching, no big leak. It went through an entire cycle and some drops came from this tab (see image). There was barely a tablespoons worth on the floor at the end. So what seal can it be?

The leak did go away. How odd. But I'm not complaining. On especially greasy loads, I have been using Cascade Fryer Boil Out. Without a doubt the best detergent available. Leaves everything squeaky clean. I am aware it can damage the insides of the dishwasher, so I use it sparingly. So far, the KDS-58 is working beautifully. |

It should not hurt anything, just keep an eye on the DW, When we have removed the top rack from WP PC DWs with the rear feed tube the rush of water will cause the DW to leak a little under the door, but I don't think a KA will do this, WP PC has much stronger top water pressure.
Has anyone here tried this on a KA 18-22?

I experimented with this on my KDS-18 and and had very poor results. Next, I made 2 attempts at jamming a rubber stopper in the upper rack water orifice tube against the back wall. It blew it out immediately on both occasions. Following that, I tried jamming the stopper backwards (It took every ounce of strength I had). That lasted about 4-6 seconds on all 3 attempts before shooting it out again. Threw in the towel.
If one has the space, I recommend purchasing a one arm wonder KD-17 or older unit and removing the upper rack. |

Thanks John. I'll keep an eye on it. I am washing a splatter shield I purchased to help protect the real panel of the Caloric. It measures about 33" X 17". Perhaps I can place it in a way that it disrupts the stream from the top wash arm orifice.

No, Hopefully the Bi-Metal activator is just out of adjustment.
It could also be a tight shaft or bad BM or a wire burned off the BM.
If the main pump motor is not drawing enough watts it may not open either, usual causes are low water fill, clogged fine mesh filter or even a bad wash arm support.

Glad that helped, This is why I never want another DW with a filter, my KDSS-20 worked quite well but it often started to smell from all the stuff left on the filter.
I did discover at one point that the little hole on the bottom of one of the wash arm spokes that is supposed to help rinse stuff off the outside of the filter was blocked, once I cleaned it it helped a lot in keeping some of the stuff off the filter.
I still have a KDS-16 and a KD5 portable in my homes that get used a few times a year each, but the 4 DWs I use on a regular basis are all WP Power-Clean machines.
