First post.
Bought a house a few years ago that came with a Kitchenaid Hobart Superba KDS-19.
A couple of months ago it was not draining completely. After doing a little research online, I took it apart and found some bits of plastic in the drain line before the drain solenoid. I cleaned that out and then took things apart from inside and the drain impeller had one fin broken off. After putting things back together, it worked fine but, I decided to order a replacement impeller anyway.
So, after a few weeks , I for around to replacing it. Not having a manual to work from I just did the best I could putting the new parts in the same as the old, as best I could tell.
Did a test run and when it got to the drain cycle , a bunch of water came out the bottom :-( . There was on small rubber o-ring that I wasn't sure about. Also, it seems like the impeller was not seating all of the way down over the motor shaft seal underneath it.
Unfortunately, our home office is in the basement under the dishwasher and it took out the HP Laserjet with the water.
Normally, I would have monitored activity with the bottom panel off but, the Chiefs -Colts game was on.
Where to from here ?

time to read the directions!

Download the service manual for the 19 or 20 from the Ephemera library and follow the directions for installing and shimming the shaft seal and drain impleller and wash pump impeller as well. The tolerances are critical to making the seal work properly as well as allowing the wash pump to deliver maximum water volume.

Also, make sure that there is still a full and complete seat for the lower portion of the shaft seal to bottom out on. Sometimes this area disintegrated and no matter what you do, it will not seal anymore. You will need that lower housing to be replaced. No longer available except from one of us hoarders or, maybe if you are lucky, on Ebay.
Hobart does still provide it and it will work in your machine even though it will have extra bushings for their improved wash arm support. You can install your old one on the new bottom housing if need be. Let me know if you need that part number.

Thanks stevet

I will download it this weekend and start familiarizing myself with the parts and procedures.
Meanwhile, hand washing isn't so bad.
I have considered a new machine but, when I look at the prices and uncertain quality, I think I'll try to keep the superba going a bit longer. Besides, way cooler looking :-)

downloaded manual - " Touch or clear" gauge

I've downloaded the manual. It makes reference to a touch or clear gauge(TL-91 043) Do I need to locate one or is there a workaround ?

When I installed the drain impeller before, the top of the rubber shaft seal kept popping up preventing the impeller from seating correctly by pushing it up. I didn't know at the time to lubricate the seal with water before installing. Could this cause the seal to fail ?

Also, what should i use for shim washers ?

Thank you.
