Hello!

I'm new to the message board. I have a coppertone O'Keefe & Merritt oven and just recently found the matching cooktop.

Now, I am on the search for a coppertone refrigerator and dishwasher. As I'm sure you all know, not so easy to find! I've been trying to find a bottom freezer GE refrigerator with the lazy susan shelves. I attached a picture of a similar fridge in a different color. I know there were a couple bottom freezer models that are slightly different with different handles. I'm certainly open to either if anyone knows of any! I live in Los Angeles.

Icing on the cake would be a coppertone dishwasher. I saw a really nice GE one that was posted a while back.

$175.00? For a dead 'fridge?  If that $25.00 "thermistor" fixes it, why doesn't he fix it?

Thanks for the replies! I should also mention the fridge hinge needs to be on the right because it's up against a wall. Good find though. I don't think I've found a single coppertone fridge for sale since I've looked.

I attached a couple of pictures of the oven and cooktop. I'm having the cooktop re-chromed. It had a bronze finish around the dials that just deteriorated and can't really be cleaned up.

I also plan on repainting the kitchen back to its original muted greyish green color. The Farrow & Ball card room green is pretty similar. It was repainted at some point in that awful clunky white. They even painted over the brown hood, which drives me nuts.

That's an amazing find Jeanine! Thank you. Apparently, the dishwasher is in almost mint condition. If they have the bottom front cover that's missing from the photo, will definitely try to buy it from them and have it shipped.

I asked for pictures of the inside of the fridge because I'm not too familiar with that model. It's good they're a matching pair though so definitely worth considering. I've heard horror stories about certain era GE fridges, so if anyone has opinions about either, would be good to know.

Thank you for the leads. It looks like the dishwasher from the ad above is going to work out.

The fridge was too small to fit in the built in area that's already there in my kitchen. So... looks like I'm still on the lookout for a fridge. The space calls for something pretty full-size like the one I attached up top. I'm sure something will come up eventually.

The only way you'll get the swing-out shelving is with an early '60s GE (Norge did copy this, but I'm sure they weren't anywhere near as common and GEs were).

I've been on the hunt for a similar GE hinged on the right for quite a while, and I'm not even that particular about the color.  You probably have a better chance of finding what you want in L.A. than I do in the Bay Area.

RP2813 - I did actually come across 3-4 of them at a place called Savon Appliances II in North Hollywood. Apparently, they belong to customers but have been sitting there for an eternity. I don't think they work. I'm having my cooktop serviced there and can let you know if any come in that are available for purchase. I had them put me on a call list for any GE Lazy Susan style refrigerators.

That's the smaller model with a spinning single crisper and (I think) hot gas defrost system.   I'd say it's +/- 1962.  The larger size (wider and taller) models have two crisper drawers.

If the crisper parts are missing, that's a deal breaker.  They don't say whether it's in proper operating condition either.  For $200, it better be, but since it's missing parts they'll need to come way down in price.

I would certainly consider that fridge if it were in better condition. There are some cracked drawers and the seals are all completely deteriorated. It's probably beyond my personal restoration abilities.

Any opinions on the GE coppertone dishwasher from the ad above? I've been in negotiations to buy it. He's sent me pictures from the inside and the thing is in immaculate condition. I read that there were issues with them being prone to rust but it looks brand new inside and out.

Anyone familiar with Gibson refrigerators? I found this one in coppertone (looks a bit lighter than my appliances). However, seems to be in really nice condition and a good size. www.facebook.com/marketpl...

The Gibson is in really nice shape and would be fine until the ideal GE shows up.  It appears to be missing the grille across the bottom front, and a replacement will be tough to find.

$150 isn't a bad asking price based on the excellent condition, but shipping from NJ is going to make that cost skyrocket.  I don't think it's worth the total expense to get something that isn't your first choice.

Another thing you can't check because it's on the opposite coast is the clearance between the door bottom and the floor.  On a lot of top freezer types, that clearance is so tight that the door hits my shoe and I have to step out of the way.  Really annoying.  And with that usually goes crisper drawers that are back-breaking to reach.

I would hold out for the right bottom freezer GE to come along and in the meantime put any old fridge in there that will fit until you find what you want.

The early 60s Gibson Ref

combo52's profile picture

Is more likley to work than a 60s GE bottom freezer ref, BUT is a cheaper, noisy poorly built ref, differently not worth moving across the country.

John pointed out something I had intended, but forgot, to mention.  Gibson appliances from that period were game show give-aways, so the shipping scenario makes even less sense, even if the fridge is still operating fine.

Once you get a big, full-featured GE with a butter conditioner, it will have been well worth the wait.

You might want to consider any color, then have a local custom paint & body shop recreate the coppertone including the shaded edges.

Regarding the dishwasher, there's a recent thread with pictures of a modern (perhaps Bosch) dishwasher that was outfitted with the entire front panel from the vintage GE that it had replaced.  I think this was relatively easy to accomplish because the new machine had the controls on the top edge of the door.  I'll try to locate it.

THAT IS THE EXACT FRIDGE I'M LOOKING FOR. Nicely done Spacepig! I would have never come across this.

I can't imagine what shipping would cost from North Carolina to California but I'm seriously considering it. I don't know that I would ever come across this locally.

I actually came across it by accident as I was looking for something else. As for shipping, you can plug in things on Uship and it will give you an average of what something will cost before you actually put it out for bid.

I think I may have gotten too excited too quickly. This looks to be the smaller model, which might be too narrow and short for the fridge area. Going to have to sleep on this one...

GE Ref In Replay # 21

combo52's profile picture

Is a 1964 model, it is 30 1/2 " wide, the 34" wide models are bigger of course, I like the next generation of these a little better, 1965-7 where they got away from the evaporator coils on the ceiling of the ref section like they did from the start of the 34" wide models, also the bigger models had the more desirable foam insulation and actually used less power.

I agree that the coils up top interfere with useful storage space for tall items.

The wider model has two crisper drawers instead of the 30" model's single demi-lune that spins.

Maybe time is on your side and one of these with a semi-automatic ice maker and its trays will show up.

Yeah... Unfortunately, painting coppertone isn't really an option in LA. It costs a fortune to have any work done in this city. There are places that will do solid colors but even that costs more than shipping cross country. I pretty much have to find one that's good to go. Would be worth it for me to pay for the shipping wherever it is.

The Admiral looks pretty nice. If it were local, I would purchase it at least for the meantime.

I just had the coppertone GE dishwasher delivered and it's costing me a pretty penny. Having a fridge shipping is going to cost a fortune so I don't think it's worth doing until it's the exact model I'm looking for.

It looks to be in pretty nice condition. I messaged them about size and whether it's frost free or not.

Whirlpool Built Coldspot ref

combo52's profile picture

These were very good refs and about the only other vintage ref that is worth still having today other than 1960 and later GE refs.

This one is Frostless in both the ref and freezer sections.

The only bad thing about using this or the old GE you are looking for is they both use 3-4 times as much power as a new ref . You can reduce the power consumption a good deal by replacing both fan motors with new ECM motors and changing the defrost timer from twice a day to twice a week, and if it is dry enough where you live you might be able to disconnect the electric anti-condensation heater around the freezer door.

"SR" Sears Roebuck emblem

How late did Sears use the 'atomic' looking "SR" emblem? I am thinking this must be about toward the end. Since it is coppertone, is it a mid-60s?

Just doesn't look like anything but the GE's will match. The finish is just too far off.

She did lower the price to $150. Pretty good deal if anyone else happens to be looking for one. Looks to be in extremely good condition. She didn't know what year it's from but I'm guessing a later one as well as it doesn't have the rotating deli drawer.

The dishwasher looks brand new inside and out. I don't think it's ever been used, looking at the wiring. Crossing my fingers that everything works fine. The finish matches my wall oven perfectly. Thanks again Jeannine for tracking this down!

Sears emblem

The atomic looking Sears emblem was short lived, 1960 thru 1962 I believe. I wouldn't trade that Coldspot for all the other fridges made in that timeframe,,,IF I was forced to have a frost free Personally Frost Free fridges and self cleaning overs are two complicated things Ihave nO use for

That dishwasher is beautiful!  As if it just came out of the box.  And talk about simple to operate...

If you're replacing an existing dishwasher, and that dishwasher has any kind of sound insulation, you might consider robbing the insulation and wrapping the GE before you slide it in place.  It might make this GE a little less noisy when running.
