I work with a guy that has acquired a 1949 Hotpoint Ref. and he wants to clean the racks.  Can someone suggest what to use to clean these.  Thanks !!!!

It depends on what may be on them... If it's food/beverage residues, warm water and an all-purpose type cleaner should be fine. If there is surface rust, a steel-wool soap pad will take care of it.
