You may have seen on the vintage Bendix Birthday thread Alistair has take delivery of the Made in Britain Ebac washing machine. Story goes one Saturday morning Richard (Ricky5050) flagged up that he has seen this machine in a BHF British Heart Foundation) 2nd seller shop for donated and household goods In Newcastle. Unaware to us Mikey (MikeyMatic) was literally round the corner from the shop with his mum shopping.
So next day they met up and hauled it into the car and was delivered to Als Emporium !!

Link is to RobM thread on his Ebac 7kg 1400spin machine.

Ebac are world renowned for their de-humidifiers and water coolers and have a plan to returm washing machine manufacturing to the UK in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, the North East of UK which was mainly a pit mining district but devastated by Thatchers controversial elimination of our coal mining pits and communities.

The pump arrangement like the powder dispenser has taken the best of past UK machines and developed on. To access the pump tray you remove the bottom plinth and you have a small drain hose to drain off excess water and then you can unscrew the filter barrell.

The drum had a jetsystem which has two jets providing streams of water from a pump. The first jet is a small eyelet which sprays a wide stream of water over the door glass and keeps it free of any undissolved powder or liquid. The main jet provides a powerfull ploome of water over the centre of the drum saturating the clothes.

The cabinet is a very solid design with locked corners for extra rigity and stability. The ribbed side panels provide extra strength and sound absorbtion. You can see the wide rubber foot on each corner of the rear cabinet, this really does help machine stability.

Hello Louis as far as I know its had a very limited rollout for the UK, slow and steady release to see how it went the PR stated. Now a new Marketing and Commercial Director, Richard Foster, has been appointed to drive the market forward and it seems to be paying dividends. New simplified website, glossy PR art, sales plinths and stands for the Independent Electrical Stores, it reminded me of the Hotpoint New Generation launch in 1982 when the same style plinths where used to great effect, look so much more stylish, Point of Sale etc, so all seems good !!

Louis, nowthen have just pinged Al who has been busy testing out the Cottons Saver programme yesterday by luck and chance lol...

Cottons Normal
Temp 60d
Spin 1600rpm
Time 4 hrs 2 mins

Cottons Saver
Temp 60d
Spin Speed 1600rpm
Tme 2 hrs 6 mins

Interesting it doesn't work like the other Eco progs and much longer time with 30 / 40d wash temp, just gets on with it !!

Alistair says the time dropped to 1.38 when load was saturated and everything spotless !!

Those two programmes are rather confusing. The Cottons saver looks more like a time saver and the Cotton programme with the economy symbol is more an energy saver? Miele programmes with that symbol (is there actually a name for it?) don't wash always on the selected temperature, is that the same with the Ebac?

And then there is the Cotton Saver with intensive option and the Allergy programme... Lots of options to do your cottons!

Ebac Washing Machine

vacbear58's profile picture
It certainly is an interesting machine and thanks to Richard and Mikey (aka Ladies that lunch) for finding this and arranging the transport from the North East. And thanks also to Mikey for cleaning it up, although it had not been much used, it had been sitting unused for what seems like a good while so it was a bit smelly.

As Mike says above, the biggest problem this machine faces is that it is not cheap, this one is pushing even on low end Mieles, which may be BOL but still have that magic name on them. And, looking around, there are plenty of machines around which have, on the surface, the same sort of features as this machine for a good deal less money. Indeed a friend just bought an integrated Beko washer DRYER which cost nearly £100 less than this. Fair enough they may not be as well built and may not last as long, but that is for the future, today I have clean(ish) washing.

There certainly is a wide range of options on them although, if I am honest I just normally select the cottons wash and leave it to get on with it. I have also done a "Mixed" wash also, results have always been fine. It takes about 10 minutes longer than my 15 year old former daily drive Miele which is no big deal.

I had wanted to add one of these to the collection, even as a curiosity of being a British made machine and indeed considered buying a new one a couple of years ago,
however Which really slammed the rinsing performance which put me off what might have become my daily driver.

Well I cannot see what the problem was, as you can see from the pictures there does not seem to have been too much of a problem - after the wash was completed it was then spun out in a 2800rpm spin dryer. There is a little cloudiness, but not much and I have seen far worse results coming from vintage washers (shock, horror!!!) which use far more water. This was from a load of towels Mike mentions above that took 1hr 35 mins. I am not in the least concerned that this machine is cold fill only, it would have been my choice in fact as I am a strong advocate of the benefits of heating the water from cold using modern detergents. I have solar panels and try to use all appliances when the panels are operating so it is still eco friendly.

Al

I can see what you mean Louis in relation to the way most machines present their programmes these days, I think this way just tells it as it should be !!

And yes the temps are default 60d not lowered to 40 and lower with extra long times by the hour.

Good and fair review n feedback Alistair, I`d be happy with that rinse water, and yes its been an interesting exercise seeing how clear / cloudy / soapy the results have been across all the new and vintage washers.

Its going to be a Classic British washer by design and build whatever becomes of it, and certainly one to have and promote !!

I wish them the very best of luck. It's a tough time to be launching into that market with a lot of economic uncertainties over the months ahead.

The one thing I would like to see is the whole-life economic cost of white goods accurately represented in their purchase prices.

I think there's a huge issue with ultra cheap washing machines and other appliances that are barely lasting 24 months. They're being produced at very low prices, with very low quality, offering large numbers of features and high spin speeds, but they are not lasting the pace. The result is huge amounts of environmental burden both at the manufacturing side (which may be unseen in the far east) and at the recycling side when these items appear in the waste stream.

These are mechanically complex machines and I don't know how anyone could expect them to come at the prices that some of them are on sale for. It just doesn't add up.

Well done for getting One's mitts on one!

You'll be able to suss out the idiosyncrasies. And it does look a sensible machine.

I'm curious to know, does the Ebac have a 3D-Motion sensor attached to the outer tub (like the Panasonics)? If not, then good. These are a menace to decent folks and Society in general.

I noticed with my Panasonic that attempting to do a 'Cotton + Speed option', the stated temperature on the display seems to get knocked down by ten degrees Celsius in reality, so 80°C becomes (measured by me) 70°C. I'm sure under the same programme/option, the 70° became 60°, and 60° became 50°. Time taken seems to be in the region of 1:38-ish.

Regarding the rinsing on the Ebac, it doesn't look that bad to me, and it's probably no worse than most other machines. I suppose if it came to the crunch, Ebac could fit an optical turbidity sensor to automatically add or delete a rinse where necessary.
