What is up with Phyllis Berens Hat? Looks like some type of bowl turned upside down over her head. Is there potato Salad hiding under that thing? |

It was in style back then...as seen on the cover of this 1957 Oldsmobile brochure.

You must be very young not to recognize a style of hat that was very popular in the late 50s into the early sixties often favored by full-figured women. |

Very young? I wasn't even born when those hats were in vogue. But I'm old enough to remember Control Data Phoenix cartridge drives and 8" floppy disks. |

So this is your machine I think I may have found it on youtube before? How does it work is it on a concentric wheel ????? Not sure if thats the correct term ?
Its fascinating to watch and it really does seem to be gentle how come they are so rare why did they not keep up production? I know more questions but its interesting and I love watching these old machines Thank you Austin |

Austin, the agitator is on, literally, an off-centre cog driving the agitator shaft. The mechanics behind this machine are suprisingly simple (I've heard a fellow collector say these machines could be repaired with tractor parts - I believe them!).
I would imagine that because the capacity of the machine was fairly small, Kelvinator chose not to develop a larger-capacity version of it. Like so many older machines, the lack of parts to do reasonably simple repairs (like pump replacement, gaskets, hoses, etc) as the machines aged drove people to replace them. I should look through my restorations albums to see what pictures I took of the drive mechanism of this one. I'm about to head out on vacation until mid-March, though... EDIT: found a picture of the drive shaft mechanism.
