I am looking for a used Transmission belt for my 1986 Maytag washing machine. I have no problem finding a replacement belt for the water pump ; however, the belt that goes from the pump to the transmission. I am finding it hard to find one that fit. The one they sell as a replacement tend to be too tight...and cause the motor to smoke. I need a belt that's is loose. I was wondering if anyone had for sell a A412 or LA412 model Magtag washing machine transmission belt, part # (211125). I really need the thick belt that turns transmission.

Thank you for your time.

belt from pump to transmission????….no such thing...

should be a main drive belt from the motor to the transmission, and another to the pump...

a new belt should not cause the motor to overheat or smoke....if it does, you may be looking at a motor issue....

I would also be checking motor glides and springs....

I found numerous options for replacement belts to fit my A712.  It's pretty tough to find one that's a tight fit.   The only difference I found was that the belt itself wasn't as thick as a genuine NOS Maytag belt and its composition was different from an OEM belt that's designed to slip.

2 possibilities:

1. You're using an incorrect replacement belt that doesn't have the proper fabric wrapping design. This is common when a genuine Maytag (now Whirlpool) transmission belt isn't used. Here's the real deal:

2. If the proper transmission belt was used, your motor carriage isn't "clutching" properly. It's usually due to dry and worn rollers/glides (the glides are pretty stout),or a gummed up track.

Always clean all of the pulley grooves with a non oil based product before replacing any belt.

It's also possible the transmission has issues.

To clarify for the OP .... the motor/transmission belt functions as the spin clutch, is *intended* to slip on the motor pulley during spin acceleration, and has a special fabric coating to facilitate that slip.

A "lawn mower" belt *cannot* be substituted, no matter how tight or loose ... it won't work properly.

The motor mount/carriage is on rollers and spring tension which also is part of the clutch process for agitation vs. spin.

Belt tension adjustment is via the PUMP, not the motor.  The pump is adjusted on its slotted mount such that the motor carriage just begins to move against its spring tension when there's no more than 1/4" space when pinching the pump belt together at halfway distance between the motor and pump pulleys.  If the motor moves when there's *more* than 1/4" space then the adjustment is too tight.  Leaning the machine back when pinching the pump belt can skew the adjustment because the weight of the motor causes it to fall against the spring tension. The pump belt normally is almost alarmingly loose when adjusted properly.
