After a load, I've noticed I have to wait for non heated Dry before I can start the next round and often the drain motor comes on first. Is this normal?

Try this

Close the door and press the "Cancel/Drain" button. Let the machine cycle through the entire process. When it's finished unlatch the door and wait 90 seconds.

Some timers from this model require a full timer increment to re-set after the completion of any cycle. This typically is not an issue as it takes more than two min to unload the machine after it's finished. However, if you cancel and then try to go to another cycle right away it can cause the timer to become out of sequence.

If it still acts erratic after trying this then it is probably a dead spot somewhere on a timer can causing the timer to just stop.

Let us know if what the results are. Good luck!

I tried hitting cancel and letting it drain. I then
-opened it and let it sit
-hit normal cycle

and it still read non heated Dry for a minute or two. Then nothing. I then opened the door and hit normal again then it went in the normal fill and heat. Maybe this is normal?

Not normal

Your timer is taking too long to re-set after the latch is raised. There is likely a dead spot in the timer, at a point where it is reaching the last increment or two. Unfortunately you will have to replace the timer to correct this. You can also live with it for a little while, but eventually more of the timer will become inoperative.

There are at least two KDS-19 timers on ebay right now. I don't have the links handy at the moment, but will post them in a few minutes. I know one is labeled as a Whirlpool timer, but that's only because it was boxed after Whirlpool acquired the brand.

Stay tuned....

This one is $95. This is the one under the Whirlpool name, but it is the replacement timer for the original (it looks a little different).

Thank you very much for the reply. So if we open it prior to the non heated Dry completion and hit cancel, it should allow us to unload, reload l, close the door, and hit Go for the next cyclel?

It might, but based on the symptoms you described I don't think so.  The last increment of the cancel cycle is a silent countdown, usually about 20 seconds, and then the machine cycles off. When you lift the handle, the RA motor is energized to re-set the timer to the starting point.

Your timer is stopping before that last increment.  When you 1st raise the door handle the timer cam is not in the correct position to activate the RA motor, but it must be moving slightly from the dead spot. When you latch the door again and press a cycle button the timer finishes the last 90 seconds of the previous cycle.   When you raise the handle again, the RA motor takes over and moves the timer to the correct position  (try this and listen for the timer to move; it's located behind the cycle indicator lights).

Hope that makes sense.

I waited for the no heat dry cycle to complete this time (took patience... Lol) and now it starts as it should. If I don't wait for no heat dry to finish, I have the problem above each time. I guess for now, I will just wait for the n.h.d. light to go out before opening the door. I suppose an arduino and a few relays could replace the antique clock type timer, but that's part of the beauty of this old machine.

Not sure I'm recalling correctly but my 22-series Superba *may* have had one increment of pause at end of the dry period before it shut fully off.

Canceling a cycle:

- if it was any any point *prior* to the drain after the final rinse, the timer fast-forwarded to there and drained for one increment (either 1 min or 1.5 mins)

- then it fast-forwarded to the last increment of dry which ran the blower (presumably without heat, perhaps as a cool down for the drying heater element?).  It also ran this one increment of dry at the end of a Rinse/Hold.

*- one increment of pause (with the Dry light still on)*

- then the timer advanced again and the cycle lights turned off

Raising the handle ran the timer for just a moment to move it to the start position in preparation for pressing a button for the next cycle.

Don't raise the handle until the cycle lights turn off.

Timer and Cycle Button Reset On A KA KDS-19 DW

combo52's profile picture

The most common problem we have with these DWs as they age is the push-button cycle switch getting balky and not resetting as you open the door.

As you lift the latch a lever on the right side pushes a tab on the left end of the PBCS, this pops the chosen cycle button back out and allows the the timer to advance one last increment to the starting position.

If your PBCS is getting balky spray lots of electrical safe silicone lubricant in it and see if that helps, it also often helps to use a different cycle from the one that is always used [ usually this means going from normal to heavy or soak&scrub etc. ]
