Note item J, the Welby 8 day wall clock (this is before battery movements), has a $2.03 excise tax. Excise taxes were placed on so-called luxury items as well as things like alcohol, automobiles, gasoline and, earlier in the 20th century, appliances. I remember from reading the old issues of the appliance trade magazines how the industry lobbied against the excise on the rapidly growing field of electrical appliances. You will note that by the time of this offering, the major appliances no longer have a separate excise tax, but the wall clock does. Interestingly enough, some clocks for home or personal use still have an excise tax if the selling price is above a certain amount.

Shampoo used to even have an excise tax, was considered a luxury I guess. All cosmetics had a excise tax until sometime in the mid to late 60’s, I can’t remember exactly when the excise tax was dropped. The excise tax was 10%, so on a $2.00 item there was and additional $0.20, over and above the state sales tax. But I do distinctly recall the labels on the products, which had the price and the excise tax amounts clearly displayed. The Breck Shampoo and Creme Rinse bottles immediately come to mind.

I thought yesterday's POD of the Westinghouse appliance ad was neat, showing & telling about just about "the other We Make Everything That's Electric, (just like GE_)!", Westinghouse (being a such competitor to General Electric) which today's POD is a nice continuation of...
