I just purchased a Maytag Model E in avocado (color). It has a turquoise colored wringer release. Does anyone have any idea how I go about finding out what year it was made?

This machine is in almost unused condition and in perfect shape. I also have the Owners Manual.

If anyone is interested I can post a photo.

Thanks!

Hi ... please DO post a photo; I'm sure we'd all love to see it!

What is the serial number of the machine (located on the back). Make sure you include the letters following the number.

Where is Emily, Minnesota? Lake Emily near Glenwood/Starbuck?

A picture would be great - those colored Maytags are rather rare!

Well, I hope this works.

Geoff, Emily, MN is about 30 miles north of Brainerd.

Oh BTW, the Model Number is EL2. Have any idea when it was made?

Hi ... that sure is a beauty of an Avacado Maytag E2L!!

If it doesn't have the wringer control foot pedal, then it was made prior to late 1968. I think October 1968 is when the wringer safety foot pedal came out.

The Avacado Maytag (only available in the E or Master series) was made for just a short period of time (not sure of dates). Around 1959 through 1964, Maytag also made pink versions with the chrome M-A-Y-T-A-G letters in front.

I always thought it would be fun to have one in yellow; but some other color than turquoise for the release bar and agitator.

Cabinfever ... were you able to find the serial number on the back of the machine? On older machines, they were imprinted right onto the machine in the center near the tub in the back. Later on, they were printed right on the silver model tag that was applied to the center back of the machine.

If you have the serial number, we can then get you a month and year when it was manufactured.

Whoever owned it before you took good care of it! I'm sure you will enjoy using it! :-)

The silver label on the back had only the model number on it, no serial number.

So Geoff, you're saying the serial number should be stamped into the machine? When you say, "in the center near the tub in the back" are you saying under the lid near the tub?...maybe on that chrome (or stainless) top?

Hi Cabinfever ... on the back of the machine; straight above where the silver label is. Right near where the aluminum tub starts.

If you can, take and post a close-up pic of the back. You did a fine job with the other pic!! :-) Also, how about a shot of the interior; I bet that tub is in great condition.

Serial Number 25313HH Does that help, Geoff? Thank's for pointing out the location!

Here's a photo of the inside (sorta):

Cabinfever ... sure does! I believe your machine was made in April of 1969. I don't have my date code chart with me today but from some of my notes, that looks like around the date. And, that would be about right because of the color. I'll double-check with my date code chart tonight. I am also trying to figure out how long they made that avocado color for the E.

Boy ... that's a good looking machine! Use only soft water (no Calgon) and no bleach in that aluminum tub. Chemicals will darken it. I use just plain original scent Tide in my wringer washer(s); it works well and maintains the aluminum tub on the E. The combination of Tide and hot water does not darken the aluminum; actually it helps to bring it back to its original shine.

Here's what a Model E looked like new ...

And here's an interior shot ... complete with manuals and gooseneck for the pump hose. It was a lot of fun to find this machine brand new ... never used!! It was part of an elderly woman's estate; she bought the machine new in 1983 when Maytag said they were going to discontinue the production of the wringer so she would have as a "spare".

Her old Maytag was still running when she died. What a testament to American-made quality!

Here's one of the info that was in the original plastic sleeving in the tub; the dealership had recorded the model number (E2LP) on the card. It really is an E2LPS ... because of the "S"afety pedal.

Here's a shot of the pump lever and the card that was attached to it. Sorry for the quality; the card reads:

IMPORTANT ... Drain pump thoroughly by lowering drain hose before storing machine in freezing temperatures ... THE MAYTAG COMPANY

I kept everything ... all the cards and the torn paper from the rollers; it was a lot of fun!!

I double-checked the chart last night and your machine was made in April 1969. The color was called "Spanish Avocado" and Maytag started using that color in September 1967. I don't show when they stopped producing machines in that color, however.

The foot (or safety) pedal to operate the wringer rollers was put on all conventional washers in October 1969. The "Let's Talk Service" bulletins indicate that the safety pedal was starting to get introduced in May 1969 ... a month after your machine was made.

Hang on to your machine; it is a fine specimen of an American-made product ... right down to the bolts!! :-)

Interesting Geoff. I noticed that the Maytag factory even went through the trouble to line up the "Maytag" logos on the wringer just before they shipped the machine. Now that's attention do detail! I imagine the later pictures of the 3 wringers together was after you had used the machine, and the rollers were turned around.
