Was it around the early 1960s when detergent manufacturers switched from putting a small sample box of detergent in new machines to just putting the coupon in with the literature packet? |

I remember stealing boxes of detergent from washers during the winter when wearing a coat. This was my mid-to-late elementary school years, so I'd push it more into the mid-1960s. Got quite a collection of owner's manuals that way as well.
Glad to report that karma and conscience caught up with me and the thievery years are decades behind me now. |

If my superficial web search is right, hubby is now 71 or 72, so if this ad is 50 years old, he wasn’t that far out of diapers himself!
Which raises the question: How did P&G’s ad agency find these “real people” and how were they compensated? I’m guessing they contacted people who had bought new washers and, I dunno, offered to pay for them in exchange for appearing in a magazine ad, but there would have to have been some vetting procedure to see if they were photogenic enough. |

It's a pretty machine... I think I would choose it over any Lady Kenmore it rivals & this was an era of lull for Sears that people (especially that young & naive) would buy a Kelvinator, Norge, Gibson, even Montgomery Wards along w/ the ever-increasing in popularity Frigidaire & Westinghouse oft the time DID Buy, even as to sooner or later disappoint...!
