A Mayday Labour day gathering at SESteves in London had us celebrating his birthday as well as sorting out his cabin washroom after many months of house renovations, also getting to grips with fixing two rare twintubs for our sins..
Heres Richard Ricky505, Birthday boy Steve SESteve, Steve and Darren SlowSpin66 getting ready to fix n repair a very rare Servis Supertwin.

Months of house renovations had left his usually pristine cabin in need of some spring time TLC...and just the gang to sort it...

First up for repair was this last incarnation of the Colston twintub, based on the Rolls Twintub of the sixties, this model had been streamlined with a larger squarer cabinet, it uses the same wash action as the rolls, a small impeller in the base of the washtub, surrounded by a heater this swirls the clothes around the water for cleaning !!

For an economically priced twinny compared to Hotpoint & Servis we where well surprised to see a grand set of German bearings on the spin mount n stem, now these where still okay it was the proverbial carbon seal that had worn hence water ingress and a start of rumbling, so while all apart a new set will be fitted !!

The next day we set too after a hearty full English and look to fixing a very rare "One Off" twin tub washing machine, now many of you aware of Servis Supertwins and Simplicity / Speed Queen Supertwins will note that the wash action is one of an agitator with
hi rise vanes giving a "Hi-Zone" wash action, oscillating at 86 opm in a 210d arc wide sweep.

Oh, Its a new galaxy being formed as we look and hear, nothing like the rumble back and forth of the Servis Supertwin gearbox we are so used to...
This is a World First and one only never been seen before Prototype Servis Supertwin using an earlier technology from their 1957 wringer washer !! |

The wash action on this twintub from 1963 is based on the earlier wringer washer single tub from 1957, this was brought to market as a much needed smaller washer offer for the UK housewife and kitchens, it could slide under the kitchen drainer and be housed anywhere in a smaller kitchen.

The wash mechanism is a revolving large turbulator spinning disc which is off set in the corner of a sloping well in the tub, it revolves the clothes through the water instead of back n forth like all other Servis Supertwins.
The empty tub system is another unique type, normally the wash water is pumped out using a typical vane pump spinning off the motor, this system uses the vortex currents of spinning water to empty, you simple move the venture pipe from the middle of the well to the side wall of the spinning turbulator disc, the water spins under the disc naturally, so all you are doing is moving the venture pipe into the stream of spinning water and it exits through the pipe...no extra moving arts at all, UNIQUE |

Heres the ratings plate, the number sequencing is not listed anywhere in any of the Servis Doctrine so its a mystery as to how it came to be,was it a prototype to compete with the Hoover wash system with spinning pulsator and four minute wash,
who knows, if you do please holla !! |

The issue with the new prototype Servis Supertwin is one that's well known with owners of the Servis Powerglide Wringer Washers, the pipe that clamps onto the tube base and venturi outlet is a small piece of hose that needs to flex an inch as the pipe under the turbulator moves into position.
This need to be flexible but with age and time they all dry out, crack and leak ! so what to use to repair it or retro fit a new pipe ...So off with the panels for easier access... |

Nowthen - This picture is very significant, having repaired a few Powerglide wringers we find that there are at least three different types of hose arrangement, probably as it evolved so did updates and better fixes / pipes etc..
The venturi pipes exiting the tub has a groove in it, and passes through an open guide which is clamped to the pipe and linked through a con rod to the existing rotary pump dial on the front of the Servis Supertwin. You can see in the first pic it is bolted onto the pipe, well we tried for ages to get the darn thing off, so after more tea and soul searching Darren finally had a Eureka moment, if we screwed tighter the bolt on the clamp (Instead of undoing it as we had been doing to release it) it will prise apart the holding clamp and the bracket will literally drop off the pipe... This is where I love this AW club, the meeting of great minds, like minded chums and brain dumps when we come together and find solutions to age old issues , Ha ha, Cheers Darren !! |

Thanks for capturing this fab weekend Mike - lots of great memories with lovely friends and that cake was something else - it even had its own agitator using the lid off a tube of berrocca and filling it with smarties - work of art!!
So good to get some of the old machines up and running again especially the A3060 - the drum and back plate had been right round the country before it finally got fitted due to various moments of forgetting to get it out of the car lol. I've attached a few pics of the outer tub repair and the backplate - the nib had to be cut off as it must be for the later series machines. Can't wait to get the Colston going again too ... |

On the colston here are a couple more pictures showing the tiny spin motor and pulley arrangement below. Everything seemed really loose but it is missing a plastic dogclutch as shown in the Qualtex parts book so new ones have been sourced along with the spin mounts and a spin belt. Special thanks to Mike and Darren on this one as I struggled to try and do this myself - not having service information on the spin assembly was really working blind!

Its also great to have the Servis up and running again - needs a bit more work to get the washdeck water tight as water was getting onto the lid switch and tripped the electrics - makes you wonder how many people got a zap in the days before such devices!
Mike - did you also say the spin can seemed to be like no other design too? Here's a couple more pics from when I collected it. |

Looking good guys !!
Steve: That Supertwin looks great 👌 i wonder why Servis never offered it as an alternative to the traditional agitator model ? bit of a tangler though !! Great job on the the tub - to - outlet hose, that small connecting hose is a complete nightmare, i would have thought Servis would have re-thought that one. I managed to get a few from a guy in Wales a few years ago. Happy belated birthday wishes as well. Cheers Keith |

Steve That spin can looks like one I've seen in a Mk44 gravity drain spinner. Ian |

Hi Greg, Thank You, and looking forward to seeing you over some time, although we did have a talk about coming over to you guys some year !! Hi Mike, I`ll let Steve explain the card, ha ha...too funny. Yes The Queens PR Agent, sounds cushy till it all goes tits up and your firefighting, which doesn't take long these times, when London calls give us a shout you`d be very welcome in washrooms over the UK. |

Morning Mickey, we aim to please from the little Isle ha ha, thought you`d love that Galaxy being formed as we wash !! Great wash action but nothing like the 210d Hi Zone. Yes such a design engineers dream of old, you can just imagine them all scribbling down drawings etc. Its not quite as quick as an electric or Hoover tyre pump but for drama purposes it wins hands down !!
Hi Keith, everyone of the 3 I`ve worked on the pipes are all different, they must have adapted them over time, I take it you've never heard or seen documentation for this rare beasty ?? Can you post a pic of those hoses you got spares of please, we`ll be interested to see how they look, but at least we know a car wheel bearing rubber gaiter will work !! |

Hi Ian, unusual one is this as Steve suggested, the spin can looks like the MK1 and 2 , solid can but has a couple of rows of holes around the base only and doesn't have the cut out vanes for the water to exit around the top rim etc...
It's also not like the MK44 which is full of holes, I've never seen this type of can before, so it looks like it could be another prototype experiment !! ?? |

Many thanks Mike for posting these. Just got back from a trip around Yorkshire.
Thank you so much to everyone over that weekend, I was made to feel very welcome and really enjoyed everyone's company. Big thank you too to the lovely Stephen, whom I class as a true friend. Stephen and his partner worked flat out to make it a success. Great to hear everyone's views and knowledge. Hope to meet you all again in the future. Rob xx |
