Following on from Steves repair weekend on the first early May Labour Day Bank Holiday we return to Als Emporium for the 2nd bank Holiday in May, our Spring Bank Holiday, always a lot to do,
we had neglected the first display space at the expense of working on the new room. Time to tidy up, sort out and re-fit. CLICK HERE TO GO TO chestermikeuk's LINK

Before the gang arrive its time to refit the drum unit with new bearings installed into the Hoover Keymatic A3962 from 1978, this was Gary`s (Electron1100) washer. Here we see it being taken apart, drum removed for bearing change..This model has a vitreous enamel outer drum with stainless steel inner washtub, the backplate is made of an alloy and is sealed with a rubber seal to make watertight. this seal dries ut over time and gets limescale build up then leaks !!

Here the bolts around the tub have been removed and using a screwdriver the backplate has been prized away from the outer tub..

Now you can see the outer holding tub and inner drum showing heater with build up of limescale, also the rubber seal band which is crusty and dry with limescale.

Time to remove the limescale and detritus, using a flat blade file the limescale is scraped away, usually flake off, then with fine emory paper smoothed down and cleaned ready for painting. A coating of Hammerite black rust proofer is applied and left to dry.

bearing changed, seal rim cleaned, a coating of watertight epoxy resin applied and the band stretched over the rim. best is to clip it to the rim with pegs to avoid it slipping off. leave to tack off and then refit

Oh! Another great event! You guys have been very productive! I almost got a heart attack seeing all those small appliances together. I see an Osterizer blender jar I think and at the bottom of the first picture, is that a Bosch mixer. I see there is an anemic one speed Philips handmixer too. lol
I love the AEG coffee maker. The first AEG's were based on the Wigomat design. Does this one stop quietly at the end, leaving behind some rest water? Or does it hiss and steam in the end. If it ends silently, it is the original design, just like Moccamaster uses up to this day. |

"I can just imagine all of the house inspectors and code compliance officials having a collective heart attack looking at this room setup.!"
And what pray is wrong with it? Electricity above water, above waste. Makes perfect sense to me! Water generally does not run uphill! When my home was extended last year to create the new kitchen/diner and display space all the plans where submitted to both local authority planning and building control (essentially our "code" inspectors) and all got 100% approval and sign off. And it is not like these machines are being used on anything but an occasional basis and not more than a couple at the same time. That concept had to be explained to the electricians who raised their eyebrows at installing 34 double socket outlets in the new display space. All electrics are covered by the very latest breaker box which is, if anything, almost too sensitive - but with vintage appliances that is not necessarily a bad thing. Al |

Back to our regular scheduled programming .....
Well where to begin .... Firstly thank you to everyone who gave of their time to bring even more of these old appliances to life - I am so often amazed at the skill and technical ingenuity that my friends bring to these projects along with a great deal of fun and laughter. Every visit seems to get something more sorted and I am delighted with the results of the re-furbished Keymatic which now looks wonderful. Mike is right that the original display room has been somewhat neglected over the last year while we have concentrated on getting the new space up and running but I am excited to see how we can develop that to include more appliances although, as ever, there are more appliances than space to put them in. And special thanks to my "partner in crime" Mike who puts so much work into these weekends - in advance by getting things looking as good as they possibly can, dealing with the technalities when folks are visiting, taking so many of the photos which provide such a wonderful documentary to our weekends, and the time to prepare and post these threads as well. This last weekend was actually the fifth anniversary of "pulling the trigger" to start this whole project off, it has succeeded far better than either of us could ever have dreamed. Al |

I do wish that your health would permit you to visit, we would love to see you at sometime. Visitors from other places would be very welcome too, we missed the presence of our special US friend this year.
Louis, those are not even one third of my small appliances collection not to mention Mike's - again something for the older display space if we can get it organised. And then there are the vacuum cleaners ...... Do you mean the blender goblet beside the Blue/White Morphy Richards (aka Krups). If so, it is an Osterizer in a form as it goes with the Sunbeam Kitchen Center (as it was marketed here) which was an Oster Kitchen Center in the US I believe. And there actually two Bosch mixers although I have not actually used either. I love the AEG coffee maker too even better that it cost 99p plus a one hour round trip to collect it. As I recall it does not steam at the end of the brewing cycle. I was very pleased to get the AEG washer dryer too as it makes the set of "electric sink" dishwasher and tumble dryer, and I can testify to it being REALLY heavy and would not like to repeat the journey from its old home to the back of my car down several steps, a very tight corner and a somewhat rickety path. But even better that it seems to work (subject to doing a full wash that is) - at least it was watertight and it runs which gets things off to a good start. It was incredibly useful having Steve there as his mother had the Neff version of this machine so actually knew how it was supposed to work, it was manufactured by Zanker apparently. Al |

Another awesome holiday weekend, expertly documented by Mike!
On a personal level, as I couldn't be there this time, it's fantastic for me to read all this and see all the photos. As I go though this thread, I feel like I'm reliving the weekend along with you guys
Great to see soooooo much progress here. We're so lucky to have so many hands-on technical people, such as Mathew for example, otherwise I think I'd be sitting and staring at a whole bunch of broken machines waiting for a miracle
Excellent thread, Mike. It's so nice for all of us at automatic washer to be able to see all this and virtually join in the fun of a wash-in, where Al makes everyone from around the world who can attend, so welcome at his home.
I'm raising my virtual glass to you all. Cheers! |

Thanks Al,
It would be great indeed to be able to travel again. I would love to see your collection in real. A trip to the UK would also mean a visit to a friend in Manchester again, haven't seen him in ages. The original Wigomat didn't have a valve to prevent the water from flowing back. That system allows a constant stream of water. Modern coffee makers have small pauses instead of a constant stream of hot water. Yes, that is indeed the blender jar I meant. Between the Morphy Richards and the Braun KM 3 or 31. Those Bosch mixers are great for bread dough, you should try one of them sometime. Do you know from when that Lavamat 2000 is. AEG bought a major share in Zanker in the early 70's. I guess that this AEG is from the 70's? If you're interested, here is a manual of a somewhat later model, the Lavamat 2000E. It may be some differences, but in some aspects it may be usable for your machine: www.gebruikershandleiding... Scroll slowly, it may take a while to download the pages. |

Depending on what part it is Manchester is between an hour and 15 mins and an hour and 30 minutes from me and it would be a delight to meet you - I think you met Mike previously at one of the US wash-ins? I think I came across an advert for the AEG in one of my home improvement books, I will have to check but I would say that style of machine was in production from early to mid 1970s, my Aunt had an AEG dishwasher of that style (and similar to the one I now have) from round 1972 or so and I have a magazine article from 1976 which features the AEG electric sink although it was not a display or new installation. Thank you for the link to the 2000E, it downloaded in a jiffy. Courtsey of Jon I have one of those in the older display space too Al |

Yes, I actually met Mike on two occasions, in 2001 and in 2005 IIRC. We made a great trip in 2005 with Robert and Eddy from Minneapolis to Omaha. Great memories!
My friend Michael actually lives in Whitefield, so that would be a bit longer I guess but it would be doable. However, a trip to Manchester is not in the stars right now. Great that you have the 2000E as well. You got some interesting AEG appliances, at that time they gave Miele some firm competition, just like Bosch and a few other brands did. |

Wow Al and Mike and everyone else that attended your get togethers get better and better, It actually made me a little sad that I did not take the time off to come over this year. You guys really know how to throw an appliance party where things actually get done, I am sure everyone went home feeling great as well as a little sad that it was over so soon.
And Mike as usual you did a great job documenting all the progress and fun, We are differently flying you over for our next event to help document it.
I am trying to stay close to home this year to get some major projects done around the house and at the museum project this year so we will be in a better place to do some events here in the coming years.
At the warehouse-museum project we are working on building out a lower kitchen break room, the restoration shop, the clean-up room for cleaning parts etc.
In the museum area I want to get the wall-of DWs hooked up and maybe some more washers and dryers hooked up, always plenty to do.
John

After the Labour Day Bank Holiday where we managed to get the Hoover Keymatic back together heres a video of it completing a cottons wash cycle, this was all the white bedding sheets we had used over the weekend !!
A 60d(140f) profile wash from cold start with the vintage Persil Powder, High dilution fill for cooldown, pumpout , no spin, 1st rinse then interim spin, 2nd rinse then interim spin, 3r & final rinse (look how clear that water is) then long final spin. All complete in just under an hour !! I wanted to film using the Vintage Persil Powder as given with the washer, less smell in the open box but when it started to heat up that fabulous aroma appeared, and washed well, I loved this rich creamy powder (that's shown in all the 70`s Hoover adds) from my nans washdays !! Enjoy !! |

Hi Chris, yes the motor is a large induction with two internal windings for slow an fast speeds, further speed reduction / faster is met by mini gearbox on end of motor and then the clutch is on the end as you can see !!
Was only ever used on this model Keymatic, by the next matchbox series electronic motor control was being introduced ... |
