Ahhh, one of the many things I liked about Brookside. You often saw the characters loading up the washer :-). Correct me if I'm wrong; but isn't that a Washcraft type Zanussi that the Jordaches had?

yep Jon the entire brookside close was kitted out in Zanussi washcraft machines. I remember seeing sheila grant stuffing hers and then running it and you saw it in action only briefly. Oh them were the days!

Pretty nifty! What I think is really nifty is that on the TV Show Roaseanne, she uses a Frigidaire 1-18 in Harvest gold! There is even a few episodes where you see the up and down action!

I remember (and this is sooo sad) when Den and Angie had their row and she told him that she was dying she had loaded up her Hotpoint and you heard it go through the rinse and spin programmes. Good old Eastenders eh!

Yep, I remember that too. You also used to hear the toploaders on older Neighbours episodes a lot, and of course you can't forget the launderette in EastEnders.

Ah yes, Pauline Fowler, aka Miss.Brahms from "Are You Being Served" and her laundrette, also staffed by the chronic chain smoker Dot Cotton. Mrs. Fowler's son Martin, grew into rather a dishy lad, a handful, but none the less dishy. How he ended up with Sonia one will never know.

The old switcheroo!

Did you notice that in the early days, Roseanne had a set of avacado Maytags? There was an episode dedicated to them selling their "old" washing machine because it had a "cracked agitator" or something. The following episodes showed the 1-18's, yet the washer was missing the timer knob. Very strange. I also remembered when Jackie would do laundry there, she used what looked like Fresh Start!

I also remember a commercial that played frequently on Friday nights while Dallas was on. It was for a laundry freshening additive by Lysol. The machine used on the commercial was a Westinghouse FL, very similar to Austin's. I believe the one on this commercial was white, however, and was installed under the countertop in the kitchen. I remember wanting that machine SO BAD. That was before I realized the luxary of internal heaters and high spin-speeds (hence the necessity for the Lysol product)! LOL

Ahhh but after Sonia's lesbian affair; who then carried on to sleep with Gus, Martin and Sonia are no longer together :-)

Bryan -

"the entire brookside close was kitted out in Zanussi"
Brookside was a soap opera about the people who lived on a cul-de-sac called Brookside Close in a suburb of Liverpool. Ran from 1982-2003, and was one of my favourite soaps of all time - I remember watching the omnibus with nana on Saturday afternoons and it was a treat because mum wouldn't let me watch it at home, especially with the storylines it became famous for! Anyway, the whole close had Zanussi appliances - kitted out is an English term for fitted out I guess. Obviously some deal between Mersey Television who made Brookside and Zanussi; as the Zanussi logo on all the appliances was larger than it would normally be.

"when Den and Angie had their row" - can be translated to when Den and Angie had their argument. Row (pronounced Row as in wow, rather than Roe as in rowing a boat) is a British term for argument.

I also remember the Contrarotator on Brookside in the last few years of the soap - though I can't remember who had it.

Lysol used to make a laundry "sanitiser" product , long since discontinued. Never paid much attention to it, but remember it being common on store shelves. Alas by the time one got really into laundry, it was long gone.

Hoover in the 70s

robm's profile picture
I also remember a screen play/comedy set in the 70s early 80s where couples spent Christmases in each other's houses. The scenes were set in peoples kitchens. I remember a scene with Maureen Lipman going over what a washing machine was to an old fashioned couple. It was a Hoover 800 with a round door and Prunella Scales (the old fashioned one) asked if the machine ironed the clothes, due to the minimum iron program.

I also remember a Phillips (I think) in Fresh Fields and the recent Doctor Who shows Jackie filling an old Bendix with washing. Must date from the mid 80s at least.

US/UK

Roseanne started out with gold Maytags, which were later replaced by gold 1-18s.

Monty Python's Flying Circus had a couple of great washer scenes. One, as I recall, was a commercial for detergent that showed a Hotpoint with the lid up, spiraling merrily away. In another sketch, Mrs. Premise and Mrs. Conclusion discuss "How to Put Your Budgie Down" in a launderette full of turquoise Speed Queens.

Edina went through a couple of FLs on AbFab, but I don't know what the brands were. And I guess we can only wonder what kind of machine Tanya Turner had.

in the house Max had the washer was a grey jet system like Gail Platts in coro. Funnily enough while Max was resident there was always the same box of Ark (remember that one?) or Ecover (cant remember which brand but it was ecological powder it may have been but i dont think it was, possibly Down to Earth, another old powder) down the side of the machine. When Max moved out the new residents got the machine in the house but they switched to Persil Performance. Nick

Queen Bea Smith behind her big steam press jamming it down on drug dealerSharon Gilmors fingers! Great programme shame it only ran for 613 episodes. Nick

Nora Batty is the well know name for Kathy Staff the actress who plays Nora in LOTSW. no matter what new character name she is given in any programme everybody here refers to her as that. Its an affectionate brit thing. Her name in crossroads was Dorris which i guess was in keeping with the Nora theme

Yep, the machines in the launderette do turn. The stainless steel ones never fill with water, however the old yellow Primus machines they had pre-1995 used to fill really high with water, as they were plumbed in. In fact I remember one scene once where one flooded the launderette as part of the storyline!

Washing on TV........

One Of My Favourite TV shows C4's "Shameless" has quite a few washing machines in it, some of which I rather like.#

80's Brown and White Hotpoint - There is a scene where you see the Hotpoint in Action - The family is living in poverty and cant afford a new washing machine, the crusty old hotpoint only works if you kick start it and keep your foot on the door, you see the washing machine spinning and tumbling, Traditional Hotpoint Noises :-D

White Beko WMA1512 - This replaced the crusty old hotpoint, you see it being installed and you hear it but never see it in action. When the camera zooms in on it, in place of the Beko label there is a "Vannec Electronics" label, I have searched the Internet for this brand I can not find it anywhere.

The next door neighbours get given the crusty old Hotpoint, and you see them carrying it through to their own house, however upon closer inspection theyre actually carrying a Brown and White Hotpoint Tumble Dryer.

There is also a Silver and Black Beko WMA 1512 in one of the homes you never see this in action, although you do see a little dog jump into it. I have never seen a silver Beko with Black Dial, and buttons :-S

Servis Millenium Edition - White with Chrome door, buttons and dials. You see this machine being loaded once, never seen or heard in action.

In the home of a nurse you see a Hotpoint First Edition WM51-53 range, and installed next to it is an old design White Knight Full Size Tumble Dryer, you never see or hear these in action.

I Think Thats them all.

Just thought I'd have an input :-)

Take Care
Dan

Washing on TV....

ITV's Cold Feet had a few washing machines in it too,

Zanussi Nexus - Adam and Rachel own this machine, You see actor James Nesbitt crouched in front of it reading the side of a really old box of Daz powder.

AEG Lavamat 660 or similar, this is in the first ever pilot episode David and Karen own it, you dont see or hear it in action.

Creda/Hotpoint Brown and White Pete and Jenny own this in the pilot episode, its tucked into an alcove.

After the pilot episode, David and Karen have had a new kitchen installed and have an integrated Servis/Diplomat washer dryer with rainwave style door, dials and huge orange power light. You see Karen unloading the machine, theres a box of "Radion" on the worktop. Ah how I miss Radion!!!

Pete and Jenny have a new kitchen installed also, they get a Zanussi from the era of the RSI machines. In Later Series their Zanussi Washing Machine gets replaced with a Zanussi Dishwasher from the same era.

Take Care
Dan

and his wife margaret had a SERVIS quartz 600 the first type when the show 1st started. Then they had a 1988 brown white hotpoint. Then at the end they had a zamussi turbodry washer dryer. Sadly no machines in action though. I remember a film on tv once called BOB AND SUE or something which showed a brown white hotpoint going into distribute and spin with the real noises! . It was an odd scene as the camera was pointed directly at the washer door and thats all the shot was.

It's a bit late to add to this thread, but I was watching the 1997 Christmas Special, 'Endgame' of One Foot in the Grave, I noticed the washing machine was a Bosch WFB2000. Although mentioned several times on here, BBC sitcom 2point4 children had plenty of washing machine's.

Stuart Little...

Does anyone know what washing machine was used in the 1st Stuart Little movie? The one he got trapped in. I distinctly remember it was a front loader that looked to be designed like an american tumble dryer, in that the back of the drum didn't move, because it had a fill flume that filled from the top back centre. Just curious.

I remember there being something on the movie make commentary section (whole movie plays, but the makers/cast talk about the scenes in the movie all the way through) of the DVD, and they mentioned about the washer, mentioning that normally TL are more popular, but in order for that scene to work they had to use a FL. I'm not sure if they mentioned a model. But it may be worth looking on the DVD.

Two shows and two young brothers flooded the laundry room from putting too much soap (a whole box, actually) and that's Bobby on 'The Brady Bunch' and Young Theodore "Beaver" on 'Leave It To Beaver'...

The Brady's had an Avocado Whirlpool, while the Cleavers laundry room, in black and white most likely had a washer in White, and like the rest of their appliances, maybe a GE...

The Zanussi in AbFab was a jetsystem washer, then suddenly became a washer dryer 2 episodes into series 2 and then switched back to a washer again at the end of the series.

I spotted Michael Palin's Servis Quartz matching set in the film "A Fish Called Wanda"

Jacob, series 1 and 2 had the Jetsystem that turned into a washer-dryer that turned back into a jetsystem. Series 3 had a Directa after Patsy burnt the kitchen down. You don't see a washer in series 4 or 5.

The Fridge/Freezer is also a Zanussi, not a Creda.

Thanks Chris, I'm sure it was a Zanuusi. It had that bluey green strip on the top like on the washers. Didn't she have a slimline Zanussi dishwasher at one point as well?

Was there some sort of advertising thing going on there with Eddy and the Zanussi's, like there was on Brookside?

She did have a Zanussi Slimline dishwasher to match the washing machine, but it was only there in episode 1. It had disappeared by episode 2.

I'm not aware of any advertising deal going on with either AbFab or Brookside. Likely that the BBC/C4 got a deal with Zanussi for X amount of appliances for a certain price.

Thanks for that Chris.

Would it be when they were furnishing the sets/houses, and they were looking for interior object etc? Zanussi just happened to come in at that stage then?

Brookside

vacbear58's profile picture
Although I was never a big fan of it I remember when Brookside started it was wall to wall Zanussi. However, there may be a simpler explanation in that, as I recall, it was filmed inside real houses (the "estate" being built for the purpose) rather than in a studio and the builder may just have got the best deal from Zanussi for the whole job. There may of course have been product placement but I don't recall any particular emphasis on using appliances, it always seemed to me just set dressing

Thank you for clearing that up, Chris, wasn't aware that Zanussi did them :)
This is the fridge that Edina had in the final series before Ab Fab ran in 2011 and 2012

Since there is so much talk of Brit shows...

This might be the ideal time to mention something I noticed on Coronation Street... A Very American-looking TL in the breakroom area at the Underworld knickers factory. Anyone else ever notice/mention this?

I have noticed what looks to be a an American Maytag machine in the factory on Coronation Street. Kinda cool because if memory serves it was in a Harvest Gold colour.

Brookside (again)

hotpointfan's profile picture
Here's an interesting clip from Brookside, in each part of an episode you can see the Zanussi Quick'n'Clean in Sammy & Katie's flat in action, going through the wash and spin phases.

Wash -

- 10.04 in.

Spin -

- 1.11 in, keep listening for t ramping up after the camera zooms in on the phone.

Also, someone mentioned the Contrarotator. It belonged to the Gordon family at number 5, I haven't seen a really clear shot yet, so will post when I see it. It looks like a CR02.

Ron sets up a mini laundry business in his kitchen, so in addition to his FL1033 he has a Hotpoint WM11, Indesit Ecosense & Hoover Logic and Softwave dryers.

Yep

It was the Gordon family on Brookside that owned the Dyson CR02. They also owned a Dyson DC05 vacuum.

Here's a shot of it.

Washing on TV

Hi all, I am finally back on AW.org again (please see the thread 'The returns after an 'eventful' 2 years to see the reason for my absence).

I'm sure most of you will remember the classic show 'Bernard's Watch' from 1997-2001 about the boy (Bernard Beasley) who can stop time with a magical watch, well I actually noticed a couple of classic machines in that show.

However if you happen to know what the correct washer type is, please do feel free to correct me.

Bernard's Grandad's neighbour, Mrs. Monk owns what looks like a Hoover Quattro 1100 AS110 (also owned by AW.org member 'optima').

Unknown Hoover A3/A8 Series.

candyd10_14x's profile picture
Now this one I need a little help on (as the video quality is quite bad on YouTube).

The Vernon's own what looks like a Hoover Logic 1200/1300 A3636 or A3786, however it could be an A8 Series washer/dryer or indeed an Electron series. I cannot make out if there is a thumb-slider or timer-knob on this machine, but I am hoping the sort of 'Sandstone' colour may give it away.

Samantha 'Sam' Vernon with the unidentified Hoover.
Also a Hotpoint Dishwasher, presumably a 7841 or so in the back.

Link to the episode 'A Worrying Time' where it can be found.

Thank you, I hope you like my contributions,

Brandon.

Stuart little

candyd10_14x's profile picture
Hi liamy1' I believe the FL in Stuart Little is a modified GE/Kenmore/Frigidaire front loader nicknamed as the 'Frigemore'. It's what I think it is but I may be wrong.
