Your first clue is "ads on TV". Guess who pays for those? And who they're aimed at (not you).
Clue two is, what Symantec products do to Windows. And it's almost impossible to fully delete the damn stuff. It's been said, not without cause, that Norton AV is a virus itself.
I've been online 20yrs with no AV and no problems. Even in the days of a dozen virus emails a day. Just a firewall.
"Serious" or new/uncataloged viruses can get through no matter what you do. Like triple-locking your door, a determined intruder can still get in.
So, since there's no such thing as 100% security and Norton is like a slovenly college roommate who 'stopped by to visit' 10yrs later and stayed 6 months, I'd just say no. |

Thank you very much. I am just scared as hell of ransomware. |
