Magnavox

I have the Contemporary Model 620 stereo in walnut. I remember when my parents bought it sometime in late '66 - I'm thinking for an early Christmas present. My sister and I weren't allowed to use it unless they were there with us, at least for the first couple years. The turntable had to be replaced about 30 years ago, and the unit still worked the last time I tried it.

I really like the Hotpoint built-in cooktop, with the deep well. The ovens are nice, too.

Agreed--I assume it's an ammonia-based closed system of some nature.

My Mom had that same Dormeyer Stand Mixer. It always sat on the counter. She used the grinder attachment to grind leftover roast beef to make croquettes, like the recipe that used to be on the old Crisco can labels, and they were really good.

Once Mom had some dishes of vanilla pudding cooling on the counter next to the mixer and there was also a package of Hostess Snowballs nearby. I was about 5 and my brother was about 3 1/2, and we decided that it would be a good idea to try out our culinary imagination and skills and mix the two treats together. So we dumped the pudding and snowballs into the mixer bowl and let her rip. Joe decided he wanted a taste and stuck his finger into the moving bowl and beaters and got it stuck in the beaters. That was the end of that experiment. Good times.

Check out the Small Appliance Convention Thread!

A fun component to the small appliance convention would be that the owner must bring a framed ad of the appliance that he brings to the convention. Now if you care to dress the part while demonstrating it, well be our guest, too! An event like this would be a blast! Wouldn't you agree?

Don’t know how I missed it the first time through, but that 1958 Hotpoint cooktop is gorgeous. Don’t often see a cooktop with a range-like console and a deep-well cooker. Slick!

I suspect you may be a little early on that Duracrest ad; don't think thinwall (aka foam insulation) came out until the mid '60s. Friends had the refrigerator in their basement (in St. Louis, which makes sense as May Department Stores was HQ there). Believe it was manufactured by Kelvinator, as the refrigerator had a cold-plate and the freezer was hidden frost/fan design (with the fan turning off when you opened the freezer).

If I remember correctly, General Electric had the thin wall design back in 1957. However, judging by the ladies outfit, I agree the Duracrest ad probably is from about 1962.

Re: Post 1046400 Icyball

Anyone have an ideal on how the Icyball worked? Ad says uses no electricity or gas, but it can freeze up to 14 ice cubes. Thanks!!!

My guess about the Icyball operation used the same principle as a gas refrigerator like Servel, but rather than gas to fire the burner it used kerosene. Thats why it could be used where there was no gas, propane or electricity.

Found this...

Image result for how did a crosley icy ball refrigerator work?
When the balls are fully charged, the cold ball is placed in the insulated box, as the ammonia evaporates to recombine with the water in the hot ball it removes heat, cooling the inside of the refrigerator for 24+ hours. A hole in the cold ball was for a special ice cube tray.

Here’s the operation manual from Louie’s post above. You can use either gas or kerosene to heat the ball.

And you can make your own. I find that rather intriguing.

Irish Cook Electric Advert from about 1980

Just a slightly odd one, featuring lots of early 80s cooking appliances from this part of the world.

In the 1980s, much like in the UK, ESB the main Irish electricity company still had a major electrical retail store network. There was a shared electricity company advertising campaign run in the UK and Ireland using the Shop Electric brand, which included campaigns for Cook Electric, Heat Electric etc etc.

Really of its era!

You're living in 1935!

Also some rather retro stuff from the 1920s and 30s

Oil Burning Fridge

Never heard of that one before and had to look it up. Found an old British film that explains the process. It's from 1939, and I'm surprised to see compressors weren't being used there when the US had them in the '20s.
