My Mom had that same Dormeyer Stand Mixer. It always sat on the counter. She used the grinder attachment to grind leftover roast beef to make croquettes, like the recipe that used to be on the old Crisco can labels, and they were really good.
Once Mom had some dishes of vanilla pudding cooling on the counter next to the mixer and there was also a package of Hostess Snowballs nearby. I was about 5 and my brother was about 3 1/2, and we decided that it would be a good idea to try out our culinary imagination and skills and mix the two treats together. So we dumped the pudding and snowballs into the mixer bowl and let her rip. Joe decided he wanted a taste and stuck his finger into the moving bowl and beaters and got it stuck in the beaters. That was the end of that experiment. Good times. Eddie |

I suspect you may be a little early on that Duracrest ad; don't think thinwall (aka foam insulation) came out until the mid '60s. Friends had the refrigerator in their basement (in St. Louis, which makes sense as May Department Stores was HQ there). Believe it was manufactured by Kelvinator, as the refrigerator had a cold-plate and the freezer was hidden frost/fan design (with the fan turning off when you opened the freezer).

so much for all the time and effort you put into these threads. It is such a peaceful joy to take these nostalgic trips down memory lane, especially in the morning over coffee. |

When the balls are fully charged, the cold ball is placed in the insulated box, as the ammonia evaporates to recombine with the water in the hot ball it removes heat, cooling the inside of the refrigerator for 24+ hours. A hole in the cold ball was for a special ice cube tray.

Here’s the operation manual from Louie’s post above. You can use either gas or kerosene to heat the ball.

Never heard of that one before and had to look it up. Found an old British film that explains the process. It's from 1939, and I'm surprised to see compressors weren't being used there when the US had them in the '20s. CLICK HERE TO GO TO kd12's LINK |
