A big thank you goes out to Bob (bobbins) who was kind enough to send me some great Maytag ephemera that I just added to the Ephemera Library.
#1 1987 Maytag Washers and Dryers Brochures #2 1985 Maytag Dishwashers Brochure #3 1969 Maytag Commercial Washer Service Manual The service manual was fascinating to me because I've seen plenty of laundromats in the 1970s and 1980s that had standard capacity Maytag washers, but only once in my life have I ever seen a laundromat that large-capacity big-tub Maytag coin-op washers. This confirmed to me that my memory from 47+ years ago was indeed correct. We were on vacation at the New Jersey shore about 1972 and the rental house didn't have any laundry facilities so we went to a laundromat which I remember vividly as I do so many of our vacation laundromats. This particular laundromat had three rows of washers, row 1 was about 10 standard capacity Maytag coin-ops in harvest gold, row 2 was about 10 large capacity washers in avacado and row 3 was about 10 1960 Frigidaire Unimatic coin-op machines (model WCOB) with the round window in the lid in white. Needless to say it was the highlight of my vacation! I so would love to go back in time to that place, but this time with my cell phone to take pictures! What struck me as so unusual about these large capacity coin-op Maytags was the fact that tub was large capacity but was the tubs were blue/gray instead of white and the agitator was black instead of turquoise. The agitators didn't have a filter or fabric softener dispensers only a cap with a hole to pour in the detergent. Even at 9 years old I knew that was very different than any Maytag I had seen before. Does anyone else remember seeing large capacity Maytag coin-op washers or better yet have one or the black large-capacity agitator? I'd love to see a picture of it. |
