My Kitchen cabinets appear to be oak with a "combo" stain/poly (think minwax) on them. I'd like to darken them. Can I use another combo stain/poly in cherry or mahogany on top of the current finish? I emailed MinWax and didn't get much help. The big box stores don't seem to have an answer either.

I would take one of the doors off, take it with you....and hit a professional paint store....like MAB

or search in your area for cabinet makers...

those would be your best choices for experienced help....

You absolutely cannot stain over polyurethane. It will just bead up and will not adhere. You have to sand off the polyurethane. You don't have to sand off the color. If you post pictures I can help you better. How old are the cabinets?
