Some have asked what I am using since the Magic Chef bit the dust and the Maytag A806 remains to be finished.

Kenmore Elite Washer Model #110.24952300 Serial # CR0419564 Manufactured January, 2004

Nicely optioned, "King"size capacity. One of the quietest washers I have ever used. The only issue is the cycle knob. The "rubber" inserts of the knob are literally dissolving.

So far, the cycle knob (WPW10043440) is being difficult to find. I found one on ebay for over 80 bucks. Not happening.

Really nice machine.  I would love to find a low-use mint one.

Agree $80 for the knob is ridiculous.  I would use a pair of pliers first!

Thanks Jim. The cheapest I've found for the knob so far is $54. LOL! yeah right.

I got lucky with this washer, got it from my cousin for free.

the best I could find was 41.00....which is still outrageous....

but the vid might help in understanding how the knob comes off....

actually I always wondered how this style was removed...

Once the Maytag goes back into service, the Kenmore will become a back-up. However the Kenmore will be replaced eventually when I find a vintage automatic washer that tickles my fancy, such as an early '50s Whirlpool/Kenmore, Maytag or Frigidaire.

Uh-oh...

ultramatic's profile picture

While doing a load I noticed halfway during the wash cycle a load clicking noise. Each time it clicked, the light above the washer would slightly dim (same circuit). I don't know whether it was agitating or not. I advanced the timer and it started to work normally again. Because of the light dimming, am I to assume it's an electrical problem? The clicking seemed to be coming from under the tub. Any ideas what may be wrong guys?

odd in that it could be normal...although if it was, it would have done it from day one....

we replaced a belt drive Kenmore with a new Whirlpool DD with GentleWash.....on high speed agitation the light in the laundry room would flicker, add music and you had a disco......once it shifted to low speed, it would stop.....

no issues during high speed spin....

if anything, I would change the motor/trans coupler first.....did you need me to send you one?

Hey Martin. It just finished another cycle now. It worked normally. How strange it did that. It seemed like something was preventing the agitator to move, but I didn't see what actually happened. Every time it made a buzz, the light would dim. Like the motor was struggling. Anyway, it's not doing it now, agitates and spins as usual. If it were the motor coupler, wouldn't it continue to do it? Or perhaps it's failing and somehow now it caught on and it's working again. I saw on YouTube it's a relatively easy fix.

yes, replacing the coupler is a quick easy fix....

I had one once that was making a clicking noise, and I thought it was the gears in the transmission making the noise of slipping or cracked teeth....

turns out if was the coupler, at points, grabbing and then slipping...

even though there are three teeth on each side of the coupler, it squashed in there tight enough, most times it can still run a bit until enough wears away...

that noise could also be from a cracked coupler, slipping on the shafts

whenever possible I get the heavy duty couplers with the metal for the shafts, and the reinforced union....

Could be an electrical-related problem developing.  The speed switches on these are known to sometimes go wonky and cause constant motor clicking.  Could also be a loose wire in the motor harness, or a timer problem.

With the matching electric dryer version, for my sister in Utah, used for $175. They were quiet but a hose broke after sometime and flooded the kitchen of their second floor duplex, thank goodness for renters insurance. If I remember correctly the spray rinse started at the same time as the spin. I kind of thought that was effective.

An oddity.

I usually wash warm wash/warm rinse. I noticed last night that while the warm wash fills correctly, now there is no warm rinse, it's cold only. Could the water inlet valve be going bad? Or perhaps the water temperature switch?

From what I've read, it seems that it is indeed the water temperature switch. I am going to check it with a meter to to be sure. If it's bad, it will be an easy replacement, IF I can find the part. So far it's NLA.

Part #WP661615 (7 positions).

Louis

I feel your pain

I bought this Maytag in 2009 when they came out with load sensing. I wanted one modern machine to use.

This has been very good with the exception of this switch. This switch controls water temp and load sensing (water level) on this machine. Everything worked well for the first ten years, then it decided that all rinses would be tap hot water.

I've replaced this switch 3 times now. The current switch has been good for the last year so fingers crossed.

Don't give up, but try to find a genuine FSP switch if possible.

substitute switch?

Perhaps another switch that fits similar models that may have less temps available could be used in place of an exact match? It would mean the template doesn't match but I'm guessing the wiring would hopefully match up.

Hi Paul. No I couldn't go that route. It would drive me nuts. It has to work as intended.

I have discovered that the model # prior to this one WP3950344 is more readily available, but only used. I'll keep searching.

My mistake. The part number for this washer IS WP3950344.

The rinse water starts filling warm, as selected. Within a minute the hot water is switched off and the cold water continues until fill. The switch checked out OK with the multimeter.

My Kenmore 80 Series washer from 2000 does the same thing with the warm/warm rinse. I read the owner's manual and it states that the warm rinse temperature will be cooler "than what we're used to". From what I have seen, none of these late 90's or early 2000's washers due a true warm rinse. This applies with and without the ATC.

Thanks Matt

This is from the owners manual, indeed the rinse "warm" temperature is cooler than the wash "warm" temperature. However, the rinse in my machine is cold. No matter if you use the manual setting or the ATC.

I am going to bite the bullet and order a used temperature control switch. I'll be installing the water inlet valve later tonight.

Cold water is 70F.

Hot water is 120F.

Temperatures vary widely. In the winter cold comes out ice cold, and depending on the time of day, the hot water can come out like lava. Really depends how many idiots are running dishwashers and washing machines without check valves. I usually run the dishwasher after 10PM because that is when the water is at it's hottest.

Apparently there is it .... your cited info says warm rinse is 70°F-ish ... so the tap-cold currently isn't low enough to trigger any hot mixing.  If it was providing a warmer rinse previously to 9/5/2021 Reply #34 then ??

Excellent point about the warm rinse only activating when the water temperature is colder than 70F. I wonder why they designed it like that. You would think with the non ATC warm/warm it would let both hot and cold in continuously.

Nice job restoring the Speed Queen. I love my TC5. I have a ton of videos on my channel including my DD Kenmore.

Matt, I'd LOVE to get a TC5 one of these days! I now believe they're the last good top loader washers on the market today. But, I think I may end up going for a front loader instead because I'm a bit concerned that water restrictions may take place in my area soon since I live in the 2nd driest state in the country.

Mike, I don't know if it has any relation to Alex's comment above ... but Kirk Rivas of Appliance Associates in Austin TX said in the live chat on a video dated 9/9/2021 that SQ told him that they are focusing on TR7 and TC5, so TR5 and TR3 will be difficult to find and frontloaders even moreso.

I can't think of anything else that would need checking/replacing on this machine. I opened up the water pump, it was perfectly clean.

To be honest while I am happy with the Speed Queen, this Kenmore has a bigger capacity and far more wash options. The Heavy Duty cycle is specially impressive. The only thing I think the Speed Queen has is a superior spin speed.

We had a 98 Kenmore DD that did not have ATC and it would do the true warm rinses. My grandparents' 99 Kenmore DD with ATC would always do the 75ºF warm rinse even if non-ATC was selected. The switch to the cooler warm rinses occurred somewhere in that time frame. Just glad we didn't have a machine that limited the warm rinse temps, or was an energy star model with really low wash temps.

I had a similar Kenmore but older before this console came out.
Before my Kenmore I had a GE Filter Flo.
Now I’ve had SQ for the last 13 years.

I thought I needed that fast chugga chugga agitation in order to get big loads clean.
I prefer the agitation of the SQ or Filter Flo. / Ramped agitator.
Much less twisting and easier on clothing.
I think you’ll grow to enjoy it in time as it has similar agitation, maybe a bit more aggressive than your Maytag.

Hey Mike,

I have to agree, clothes would sometimes come out terribly twisted and tangled. Another great feature the Kenmore had was it's "Hand Wash" cycle. Ultra slow agitation, slow spin. I have no regrets with the Speed Queen. Just going to take a bit to get used to.
