I've been a crocheter for years now, but recently I decided I'd try my hand at knitting.  Anyone here knit?  English or Continental or other?  I like Continental as it's motions are more like I'm used to with crocheting.  It's peaceful and soothing and sometimes I find myself falling asleep doing it, kind of hypnotic.

But haven't had time to do anything in years now. Still have tons of books, yarn, needles, etc.. There are several lively knitting shops and groups in city as well, but never bothered.

Knitting just seems to take forever; whereas crochet is faster IMHO. Doing a blanket or scarf is much faster with crochet IMHO.

OTOH one can make some beautiful lace type items with crochet such as dollies.

I’ve never knitted, but I had an Aunt who knitted all the time.

In the early 60’s when Mohair sweaters were all the rage, she would sit down in front her Packard Bell console TV in the morning with a cup of coffee and a pack of Camels, a few skeins of yarn and by the time The Mike Douglas Show came on at 3pm one of my cousins would have a new Mohair sweater.

I would imagine that the rhythmic motions would be very soothing, almost like meditation.

Probably not as many knitters here as  those who sew, but they are both skills that you need to admire...and two that I cannot do. All the better since knitting needles in a klutz's hands can be dangerous things.

Remember years ago seeing a knitting machine.Mom and I were fascinated by it-Esp when I asked the salesman demo'ing it to run it at its fast speed-COOL!!!!You could literally watch a sweater being knitted right before your eyes! The machine was like a few thousand dollars. This would have been like 25 yrs ago.A sewing shop in Florida that had a knitting machine along with the sewing machines.

My late grandmother made knitted doilies that were exquisite in their intricacy.  She made them for over 50 years.  Many family members were gifted these over the years.

Oh wow, that's neat!  I can crochet and tat doilies but I never knew they could be knitted like that!

A girl at work can knit and crochet, and another one can tat (she's the only other person I know personally who can tat besides me).

I worked the last four nights 12 hour shifts in a row and I'm still tired.  I was lounging in the recliner crocheting and crocheted myself to sleep for about 3 hours.

Yup...I knit

I started 20+ years when I quit smoking to keep my hands busy. I've knit all sorts of stuff. I enjoy knitting socks because they are so portable, and you can bring them with you everywhere and work on them.

Totally meditative...

My maternal grandmother was a needlework teacher. She could knit like noone else I have seen knitting. When my grandparents visited family, my grandmother would knit a pair of socks while they drove there. One on the way to the family and the second on the way home. Noone else in the family ever bothered, because the easiest thing to do was to ask my grandmother if she would knit something.

I'm enjoying practicing, but ultimately I prefer crochet.  I am planning on crocheting a shawl for both of my great nieces for christmas in their favorite color if I can find a style I like that would suit them.
