Had to force the transmission to start spinning...started smoking while spinning...burning rubber (maybe) smell

Probably the belt.

You're welcome. I hope this gives you a path forward in your investigation. Fortunately, Maytag used a slipping belt for a clutch so the problems with the drive train often show up at the belt and it's generally a belt and not a motor buring.
