I have a friend who contacted me and this is what I find... I’m speechless.
Is this a common issue? Should he call whirlpool directly?

Are you sure on the age?  The outer tub halves are held together with spring clips, and far as I've been made aware the Alpha platform which debuted more than 6 years ago have the tub sealed together as a unit ... unless I'm misunderstanding on that.

Anyway, I've read of two cases (of Alpha platform machines) reported on another discussion board (and a few others found via search).  One (or both?) of those involved one of the tub counterweights coming loose, or breaking off from the impact of tub oscillation.

Yes, contact WP.  They need documentation of ALL these incidents.

Looks like a dented tub as well...

Could have been a stone or something metal jamming during spin... The plastic is the weaker part there.

The counter balance is what fell off. He did say he heard the washer take off like a jet engine, he said it’s never done that part before.

He bought it July of 2015

Serials come out as June of 2015.

Interesting.  What model #?

One of the aforementioned incidents I recall for sure that WP gave the customer credit for a new WP or MT machine of her choice, and picked up the damaged machine for examination.  Maybe also for the other incident.

Whirlpool called him back..

Model number is WFW95HEDWO

Whirlpool had him send pictures and they reviewed it. They offered full replacement of the machine of the original price. Plus giving him the warranty on the new machine.

I’m happy Whirlpool stepped up to the plate and took care of him.

They did say they are going to hire someone to install it and take the old one. I’m assuming they will examine it.
