Someone posts an ad like this one:

"The oven is in perfect working condition. The timer on top doesn’t quite work right, however everything else works great!"

Perfect???

Post some of your favorites below.

Sarah

“Gas Dryer works great. Not heating so probably needs heating element. Simple fix. $100.” Or “washer in good working condition, doesn’t spin every time should be easy fix just don’t have time to do it. $100” And many other variations of these examples. I get a good laugh every time I see one.

IT WORKS!!! (further down in description--doesn't cool)

or "mind condition!" (further down in description--don't know if it works)

Yep, I usually laugh too although I was pretty disappointed about that $100 fridge

I always buy stuff under the assumption that something will need to be repaired. Enough disappointment and that is my attitude. This has, however gotten me pretty good at fixing things.

Here are some common definitions for words you may find in an eBay or Craigslist listing:

~"Works" -- Means it does SOMETHING eg. an old radio buzzes or squeals

~"Untested" -- It doesn't work, end of story.

Have been rather lucky

All of my AEG appliances were advertised as new or near, and they were.

That being said am always leery of adverts in general when pictures don't match copy. Also am naturally suspicious of those selling vintage appliances in general these days, have seen too many fingers burned.

My basic assumption is that most sellers don't have a clue as to what they've got, so don't get my hopes up in turn. Have also learned to accept something sitting around for ages unused likely is going to have issues. This even if it has been packed away "NIB" as it were.

My personal favorite...

When an appliance is clearly hooked up the ad says "we haven't tested it".   I always take that as "we tried and it's deader than a doornail!"

Plugged in

sarahperdue's profile picture
I'm with you Ralph. Especially refrigerators--

"We have not tested it," "Untested," and the best one, "cord cut off but probably works..."

It's a 110 appliance. All you have to do is plug it in. Of course you tested it, and, when it didn't work, you cut the cord off...

and then there are the "can be easily fixed."

"cord cut off but probably works." Tells me seller is a scrapper or someone else who came upon something that was rubbished. Don't know why but many people cut cords (or at least the plug) when getting rid of appliances. Quite mean if the thing still works. Happily have landed vintage Hoover floor cleaner/polisher, a turntable, several vacuums (could have had more), a microwave and other things were cords were left intact.

As for "untested" sometimes will cut a seller slack.

Great many vintage/older appliances come from those who have purchased a property and found the thing inside. Even if still plugged in (or unplugged), they cannot be bothered testing to point of even turning on.

In some situations don't have a problem with such listings, and may work to one's benefit.

If an appliance is listed as fully tested and operation value increases. This is most true of the rare/sought after things were those who want but aren't technically inclined enough to manage repairs can get "plug and play" objects.

Only a serious hobbist (and or someone with money to burn) will go after an appliance that may or may not work. Look at poor Louie's problems getting his GE fridge going.

Case in point: www.automaticwasher.org/c...

Was able to nab my AEG Lavamat/Lavatherm set for very little money because seller listed as "untested" and "requires 240v/three phase power". Knew that was rubbish at once, but apparently no one else caught on so the things just sat on fleaPay. One watched price drop at each relisting until reached give away level, then pounced.

Cutting off cords

I've done this several times when tossing out broken appliances. I usually have made them into extension cords by adding a connector to the end.

If appliance is not operational

launderess's profile picture
Can understand cutting cord/plug. But otherwise consider it mean doing so for something that is still perfectly usable.

Local building cuts cords and does serious damage to Miele and other high end appliances discarded by residents. These units are perfectly fine, just removed after a resident dies, unit is sold, redecorated, etc....

Translations of seller condition descriptions...

In perfect working condition! = Price is 10x what it should be, "firm" and will not negotiate at all.  (or) Item is on other side of the country, and NO SHIPPING WHATSOEVER only buyer in person to pick up and pay cash!

Needs easy repair, but I don't have time. = I've called 4 or 5 repair companies, all of them saying the fix is to salvage the casing only; and replace every part inside, all made of Unobtanium at a cost of at least $250,000 USD. Then it will work again.

Vintage Refrigerator Runs but doesn't cool. = I used a pickaxe or pneumatic jackhammer to defrost the fridge; thereby leaving multiple horrendous gouges and holes in the evaporator in impossible-to-fix places. It gassed me with sulphur dioxide, but I will not tell you about that because you may be scared off and not pay my inflated price for it.

Untested, but we expect it to work. = I tested it and it sparked, smoked and shocked me.

Not working properly. = We tested it. Knocked out power for the neighborhood and filled the whole building with toxic, acrid, choking clouds of smoke. When we returned after resetting the 200A main breaker which tripped, we discovered a medium-sized carpet fire. The fire department and cops showed up and told us to get rid of it or go to jail.

Washer is louder than most, but works OK. = Sounds like a pulp-wood truck with no muffler, dragging a logging chain through a nitroglycerine factory with the gas pedal stuck wide-open. It does work, though as every 5 or 10 seconds, the agitator twitches slightly in one direction or another.

Oh Dave!

I wish you would not have junked it. Was the cartridge not removable? My belt drive Technics has a bad servo speed controller. It has the S tone arm with removable head shell. I just bet the tone would work on yours if they are detachable at the gimball points. I have both an Audio Technica and a Pickering cartridge for it which are both still in excellent shape.

Aww, but somehow the place I'd annually ordered my needles from, I don't think offered me or introduced me to the cartridge idea, nor did I even get the notion, that replacing that, meant a new, and in-stock needle would then be available for--yes, a simple matter of replacing the entire cartridge (that small pice of plastic holding the needle) by just removing a micro-sized screw...

I'd just figured I'd go to quieter manual operation, conforming & complying in a world where needles seem only available for the lowest-priced, cheapest belt-driven stuff and for the highest-priced & hi-prized, in my direct-drive Rolls Royce of phonos, of which I'd always wanted a professional DJ-type of unit, my Audio-Techica:

Got put-off by the broken dust cover, and the console's that it was in not entirely doing the job, keeping off cakes of DIRT, actually, and the noisy automatic, gravity-defying operation subject to reaching a breaking point, sometimes in its future, and did I tell you I was even fussy about the '45' spindle, that I'd gone through a dozen of them, bartering them from other phonos that had real attractive looking ones?

And really, couldn't see myself EVER using those temporary ones that fit in the wide holes of my hundreds of 7" '45's, wondering how I'd grown in a house that had a slew of them, almost one for each record, but abhor the very existence of, preferring my likely $10 one this phono came with, versus it as a separate accessory (with a few dents on her from the iron-like weight of that thing actually falling out of my hands--to the floor, and once on the heat/air register, luckily!)...

So, it found a good owner, or perhaps that very one that recently shown up on consignment at a record store that I frequent, may, if I recognize the serial number, be MINE, then, going for an undisclosed sum...

I saved the patch cables for the Left/Right Audio, still plugged into my daughter's stereo that used to be hr mom's, but she pointedly didn't want a new phono, so I retrieved it & the cabinet now used for additional record storage, I'd long-needed... The cord & antenna had stayed on with...

“Old sewing machine, a little dusty” Picture shows it from the back (so many people take pictures of sewing machines from the wrong side. Why?) in a garage so i assume it was great grandma’s and it’s just been sitting since she died or something. Get there and the guy says “yeah i found it in a field and thought it’d be worth some money so i brought it home” 3 small live spiders came out of the cabinet, i had to glue a lot of the veneer back down and the machine head was missing some parts. The treadle belt was moldy and broken and a gross old thread was still in the needle. Now it works great after tracking down replacement parts and dunking everything removable and not painted in rust remover

Well, a few months ago I got a Speed QUeen Ultra-Mate for free...

According to the owner, it was for scrap. The washer was abandoned under a tree for a few years (maybe over a decade)

the "defect" that killed that washer was a cracked drain elbow.

After a deep cleaning and detailing (and I'm really good about OCD cleaning something) and some hot glue put on the elbow "temporarily". The Ultra-Mate is still working like new, perfect, silent, and going strong probably for the next 35 years.

So... NEVER TRUST CRAIGSLIST ADS and this advice is useful in both ways. If I had trusted the ad, I'd simply pass this wonderful washer.

Here's a good one.

I was looking for a cheap and trashy GE Monitor Top fridge cabinet. Wanted it to use for testing cooling units which people bring for repair, without their cabinet. It didn't need to be "nice" just not completely falling apart.

I found a picture of a rusted and abused cabinet on Craigslist within an hour of home. The ad said "GE Monitor Top Refrigerator, rare and vintage! Needs Freon." They had one picture of a cabinet with a homemade wood cover on top.

When I contacted the seller, she told me that a serviceman looked at it, and said it needed Freon but he couldn't figure out where to put the Freon in. I explained that while these didn't use Freon, the gas does go in the unit through the service port on the top next to the compressor.

After further talking, I realized that the entire top assembly (cooling unit) was missing. There was a cord connected only to the cabinet light circuit. She thought that was the only cord to the fridge. She would not budge off the $500 price and cussed me out, saying "All you people need to stop trying to rip me off!  I'm a woman but that doesn't mean I don't know what I'm saying!  I know what I've got, and it's $500 FIRM!!!!

All I could do is just sit there and shake my head slowly while the temporarily paralyzed brain cells started working again.

I’m surprised

sarahperdue's profile picture
She didn’t say she had another prospective buyer willing to pay $550

I agreed to purchase some wrought iron columns in Mississippi but was having trouble working out scheduling with the seller. I told her that I had committed to buy but if someone made an offer before I could pick them up to go ahead and sell them.

She unloaded on me saying she knew I was going to back out and was a horrible buyer and she could have sold them for more if she hadn’t held them for me. I was kind of relieved. I had agreed to pay more than I wanted—which I would have honored. I politely responded that I was no longer interested in buying them and go a rude “I wouldn’t sell the to you anyway.” Shortly after I found twice as many wrought iron pieces for 1/2 the price. I drove about an hour and a half to get the, but the seller and his wife were delightful.
Last time I checked, she still had those columns.
Clueless sellers... she’ll have that fridge for decades.
