Recipes from vintage cookbooks, food product recipe pamphlets and magazines. While the emphasis is on vintage, new recipes are welcomed also. When available, I will post the name of the publication and year published with the recipe. Food product advertisements containing recipes will continue to be posted in the Vintage Food Advertisements series. As usual, I will start a new part when posts hit 100.

Bon Appétit!

OK, Louie-- You gotta know the Chicken Sticks (chicken conspicuously absent) and Noodle Dish in Reply #2, as well as the Buckaroo Bar-B-Q  and Creole sauces from Reply #4 are on my radar.

Wow: Pork Fruit Cake (Zola Harvey Caughey circa 1915; Reply #3).  I want some of whatever she took, LOL.

There seems to be a missing instruction in the MinceMeat cookie recipe. What do you do with the boiling water?

Tom,
You mix the boiling water into the mincemeat, hence the instruction to blend the cooled mincemeat into the rest of the batter. This would have been to rehydrate the mincemeat, as the recipe calls for mincemeat in a carton, which indicates that it wasn’t a wet mincemeat.

Additional Suggestion For Mincemeat Cookie Recipe

ea56's profile picture
Since I don’t believe they still sell partially dehydrated mincemeat anymore, I’m not certain of this, since I never buy it and don’t care for it, I believe a safe, modern day substitute would be to use 1 pint, or 2 cups of the jarred mincemeat of your choice. And omit the boiling water!

Eddie

What are the “yelks” of eggs? Is this just a jokey misspelling of yolk?

Reply #37: We had a neighbor who hunted a lot and his wife always cooked duck and pheasant basted with 7Up. I didn't really care for game, but thought it was an interesting idea. Although we were a Coca-Cola household, my mom loved 7Up, so we always had it on hand. She'd have me sip it whenever I was recovering from the stomach flu. Consequently, I have an unfortunate association of 7Up with yakking, lol.

Reply #38: Will definitely make this Chocolate Fudge Pudding recipe and report back.

Thanks for new posts, Louie! Once again, I found an old but new-to-me recipe to investigate.

#39...I always have that nausea-association with Gatorade...cannot stand the stuff because of needing to drink it to settle my stomach. I always had a strong stomach except for when I was sick, then only Gatorade would stay down.

Thinking about making those Frosted Orange cookies and Pecan Crescent Roll cookies in the first post. Those look really good. Would anyone make any changes to them?

Barry

Post# 1198844 , Reply# 77   2/8/2024 at 21:35 by MattL (Flushing, MI)

I make a crescent almost exactly like the one posted.  Difference is mine calls for 1/2c. butter and 1/2c. shortening.  All butter makes the cookies too soft.  my recipe call for the dough to spend 3+ hours in the fridge, does make them easier to work with.  Bake at 350 for 18 minutes, do not allow to brown. Mine get rolled in powdered sugar.  Been a family recipe since 1949, my mom clipped the recipe from Better Homes...

Matt,
Thank you for the insight on your crescents. I will keep that in mind when I make them.
Thought about adding a little cinnamon and almond extract (just a little).
