Eighty years ago, Harold Van Doren & Associates designed MAYTAG'S famous "Master model E" conventional/wringer washing machine. It looks to be based on the previous popular square shape grey tub style from previous years. MAYTAG was the first home laundry manufacture to use a white finish vs the "speckled" or solid colors of cream, gray and green finish of the period.
Van Doren's unchanged design would last 44 years until last model EJP rolled off the line in Newton IA November 22, 1983. In later years additional options would be available such as paint color finishes, pumps, and timers. These machines are still workhorses used by the Amish farmers, and city folks as well, since gas or electric power options was still available until the end.
