.
Sounds like a distant siren..
What would cause it?
It’s a gas dryer.

The link won't open, but if it is a WP dryer from the late 80s into the early 90s it might be the lint filter alert whistle.

The blower itself in my Frigidaire sounds like that.  I can hear it when I pull in the driveway and get out of my car when Tony is drying laundry.

My Frigidaire dryers also made that sound if the vent collar came disconnected from the back of the dryer.

I think ComboJohn (thx!) is right, a whistle. I passed the information on to clean the lint filter and that sorted out the problem.

That had to be it. Our 1986 Whirlpool Imperial Seventy dryer had the same whistle when the lint filter was full. It was a source of amusement at first. "Isn't this dryer funny? It toots." was said several times during the first week after we got it.
