I know some of the 1980s and 1990s side by side refrigerators had a small access door on the refrigerator. GE seemed to be the most common with it. Any idea why this was done away with? I Googled quick access door, milk door, etc and I saw some older looking GE models that appear to be still available for 220V countries.

I know some of the newer french door fridges have a sort of door within a door that can be opened by pressing a button first on the handle.

Maybe this is why the quick access door on side by sides went away, because french doors took over as the "fancy and upscale" fridge during the 2000s.

Myself I'd rather have a side by side than a french door, but I suppose that comes down to preference. But I can remember when some top freezers even had ice and water dispensers on the door. These days some have water dispensers inside but you don't see any with ice and water on the freezer door.

Side-by-side with ice/water

Maybe columns would solve that for you? Essentially side-by-side, but 2 separate, merged, units.

Those were sold on this side of the pond too, but I guess they got out of fashion. Overhere the access door was named "minibar".

I had the Kenmore 27 version of that fridge.....

BEST FRIDGE EVER!.....would have bought another just like it when it needed replaced, if it was available...I got a Whirlpool 30 now, but it doesn't compare...

I got it in 1988, it was on the rear page of the catalog....I got 20+ years out of that unit without a repair....

the convenience door was great for access to things like milk....and that section was kept colder than the fridge itself...

had the digital monitor as well....

plus the ice bin was outstanding, always enough reserved ice, you never ran out...

GE offered one similar to it when I was looking for a new one, but never an exact match....

I picked up a Samsung SxS with a door within a door.  The entire fridge door opens to just the door shelves when a button on the handle is pushed, the door opens regularly otherwise.

Right now I'm using it as a backup fridge it might end up in the kitchen at some point, like the current fridge a bit better but it's almond and most of the kitchen is SS.
