Menard's is one of my favorite stores. I miss them, since moving to TN. There are no Menard's (at least at this point in time) further south than Kentucky.
They have wonderful buys on used appliances. I wish more stores would do this. I suppose Lowe's and Home Depot sell pickups of unwanted customer appliances to metal recycling facilities. The Menard's in Ohio had different bins separated by price, with appliances being sorted into them by perceived value, and they were sold untested. I got a wonderful buy on a near perfect "Frigidaire" (WCI) front loader. It was the rarer model with the back splash mounted controls, and it looked like new, not a scratch on it. Menard's had sold it in one of the higher priced bins, but the customer returned it, saying it wouldn't work. I had gotten there right after it was returned. The appliance guy just wanted to get rid of it and gave it to me for eight dollars. He guessed that the motor was burnt out. In reality, all that was wrong was the door switch was bad, keeping the machine from operating. I don't remember what I paid for the door switch, but it wasn't much. I got many years use out of the machine. I ended up giving it to the Habitat for Humanity I used to volunteer at, as the washer they had to wash donated clothing had gone out. That was about four years ago, I imagine it is still going strong. We should start a write-in campaign for Home Depot, Lowe's and Sears to sell their unwanted customer pickups as Menard's does. |
