Here's a unique one - a vintage stove, with the controls mounted remotely on the wall behind it.

"Vintage Blue Stove - Original to our 1960 home. Still works with all of the controls! We are selling due to upgrading appliances but would be good for someone who is interested in a cool-looking blue vintage stove :)"

It's funny how the definition of "upgrading" varies from person to person.
My idea of upgrading my kitchen would be replacing everything with vintage.
Different strokes.

That was the TOL Mark 27.

What was the reason for the wall controls? Safety possibly, or just a cool idea from a person who got tired of cleaning grease off of knobs. I for one want it.

The design moved the controls out of the splash and heat zone, gave the front of the range a more streamlined look, made it easier to clean, enabled a larger clock than on the middle of the line model and gave both a timed and regular outlet. GE was already using the remote controls and cable with several cook tops so it was not a big reach for using the feature on this range.

I wonder why ...

the remote controls idea didn't go far. I too would love to see more of this in newer stoves because I too despise having to clean the center control panel where the knobs live on my 2004 GE Profile stove top. All 5 knobs tightly grouped together in the center, with the gas burners huddled closely on all 3 sides of the controls. Doesn't matter what you cook, we end up removing the knobs each time to clean. We use a frying splash screen to keep splatters at bay, but once the screen comes off to flip the burgers or whatever you are frying ..... expect to spend time working on pulling the knobs off and getting in all the nooks and crannies. If the controls were remote and the entire top was simply flat, I could get back a portion of my life used to clean the stove each night. Seems like most people aren't bothered by this, else the stove top designs would have changed over time. But today you still buy a stove that pretty much resembles the same layout that has not changed much over the past 50 years. Knobs that are still fairly close to the cooking area, either on a back panel or on the flat stove top area .... still very close to the burners. Exception being front knobs, but not small child friendly. Lots of people have shunned front knobs because of this but easier cleanup is on the plus side. The stove in the picture looks like it would be a snap to clean!

I bet the remote-mounted controls give (gave) folks hesitation, both when installing in a new house build (will we ever be able to replace this if it fails?), as well as when replacing something else (how much of our kitchen will we have to remodel to use this?). Love the concept, but it would meet significant resistance just by being "different"....

I've known several people who had GE cooktops or Mark 27 ranges with remote mounted controls. The house across the street has a cooktop with wall mounted control panel (1965), and a neighbor two houses up the street had a Mark 27 with hood mounted controls (1972). Glenna C. - a family friend - had a Mark 27 with wall controls (1964) at their old house. GE was by far the most popular brand of built-ins in this area.

Remote Control Cook-Top Controls

Were a great idea but were expensive and more complcated  to install.

And of corse would have been very complicated to do on a gas CT.

Hi Bud the answer to your nightly cleaning nightmare is an induction CT, mine looks like new after 33 years of hard use, just wipe it off, it is as easy to clean as the counter-top.

These were pretty

BUT they have one fatal flaw The oven liner is very prone to cracking in the bottom.

Hans, this is the first time I've heard about the 27" GE ovens having that issue, and I've known a lot of people either with these or the 27" wide wall ovens. To the best of my knowledge, the Mark 27 and the wall ovens use the same liner, doors, etc. Did this problem occur with both the standard and self-clean models?

Oven Linner Failure In GE 27" Ovens ?

combo52's profile picture

I have never seen any problems with the floor of GE ovens either SC or regular Clean.

I have seen a lot of rust at the top liner seem above the broiler, but never one so bad that someone got rid of the oven over it.
