First guests arrive, heres Mathew (Keymatic3203) and Richard (Ricky50) armed with boxes of parts for machine fixes and swaps. The week before its always a barrage of phone calls for who needs what and when for, so that when we meet its a productive swap out, and no sooner is the car empty than its usually full of swapped appliances lol.

While sorting out the Servis display came across some promotional items of the era, this was a 1970`s promotion of a Soap Dispenser, like those 60`s tea caddys, you fix it to the wall and fill it with washing powder,
it has a plastic cup over the top which you take off and press the bar underneath dispensing a measured dosage of washing powder. |

Back to the weekend and its time to tackle the main job which is working out the fault with the Hoover Keymatic slope front timer from 1961.

The Hoover Keymatic Timer was made by Holzer in Germany and for its time in 1961 to 1966 it was well ahead of its time as we will see later, there where 6 types of timer used and the problems of the first where worked out and advancements made.
My timer is a version 2 timer called an AT timer, which has 36 cam positions, later ones had 42, first one being AU, then AT and later ATH x 4 , which was also combined with 6 harness modifications over the lifetime of the series and three styles of Keyplates as well. Oh Steve, this was the lable that fell off the timer - had it been on it would have saved time working through 3 wiring schematics checking for faults Aaghhh!!

The issue with the timer is it keeps cycling through the complete programme and timeline round and round, its had also blown the resistor which is used to switch between 240v and110v for the clockwork motor / timer advance...

But before that we need to rule out that there are no faults with the Hoover Keymatic card reader called the Keyplate Switch which is where the programme keyplate is inserted, now by chance we have not one but TWO replacement cardreaders which both came from the same shop but over different years, Big Thanks to Mike (Mikeymatic) and Richard (Ricky50) for hunting these down and donating them to the cause !!

But we dont know whats underneath that when split open , on the bottom parts is the circuit contacts to which the wiring loom connectors plugs, (which those where ahead of their time in regards to other manufacturers machines which used individual crimped wires on their timers) instead of Hoovers block connectors.

To our complete surprise its a circuit board, never seen anything like it on other timers of the era, Star Trek next generation here we come, John Hewett is a Hoover Engineer who owned a Hoover Service Centre in Cheltenham and he says that if these went wrong they where simply swapped out and returned to manufacture for replacement and credit, If a customer needed to buy one out of guarantee they charged Ł4 pounds a replacement timer which would be Ł88 pounds in todays money !!

Here is the wheel driven by the clockwork motor from above and attached are the two sets of four contacts that make contact during the revolution of the wheel on disc to provide the right energisation of components ie, fill heat wash pump rinse and spin..ingenious..
On the side of the wheel segments are the numbers of the 1 - 36 positions which can be seen on a tiny viewing window on the side of the timer, this helps diagnose faults through timer position..

Alas it had also blown the remaining resistor ( having ordered 10 of the right type but delivered the wrong Ohms ) so as this was the end of day two and no bank holiday the time flies and we leave it untill next time, new resistors ordered awaiting fitting, also the heater had blown continuity so there is a UK manufacturer who manufactures new heaters to shape and wattage of original for a reasonable fee thats being ordered as well . So...To Be Continued !!

Thanks Mike for memorialising the weekend. It goes so quick and there were a lot of us this time. Thanks to Al who never stopped cooking. And for everyone else who made it a laugh ! I wonder if they’re as are any timer experts on here? Even though USA is different voltage we could maybe’s call in their expertise to see if we can fix it?

All this Keymatic lore - those programmers seems to be like an onion, you have to keep peeling off all the layers - its is almost as if the engineers deliberatley set out to create the most complex machine then could.
Thanks to Mike for documemtating another weekend and all those who came along - see you soon :) Al |

Hi Keith (Bradforwhite) Thanks, this is only one room, theres the first washroom in a stand alone outside of the house, and a vac room which is about to be extended, never mind the cupboard displays of small appliances, its al culmination of many collectors who through Alistair came together as collectors now great friends who made it all happen !! More to come...!!

Hi Mike (Vacerator) sounds an amazing collection of the minatures, I always wanted model cars and / or trains as akid but never got them, enjoyed playing with my friends who always had the latest steam locos...
Only started collecting these about 20 yrs ago still a few about, great when you see the originals trucks delivering the washer in old photographs !! |

Evening Alan, wow, many thanks for your offer, have just responded to email, it still amazes me how some parts are still about , we are determined to get this model working fully again now it has its new paint job ..
Look forward to meeting up at Alistairs place the coming year to show you the hard work and pick your brains for the appliance knowledge !! I smile every time I see one of these new elements with much lower wattages and wiring that thin it looks you could snap it compared to the keymatic heater which just gets on with the job !! Cheers, Mike
