Not a large deal but thought I'd bring it to attention.  Noticed it long ago but thought maybe related to Firefox and an extension/plug-in specific to my use.  I normally have Scroll Highlighting unchecked anyway.  Am using someone else's laptop with MS Edge at the moment and the bug does exhibit.

Use Scroll Highlighting enabled, a Wash/Rinse/Spin button clicked via ctrl-click to open in new tab, the target link opens in *both* the parent tab and a new tab.  Right-click and Open in New Tab works properly, opening the link in only the new tab.  The slight irritation (LOL) comes from the convenience of ctrl-click vs. right-click and having to focus the mouse on the Open in New Tab option on the context menu and clicking again.

Use Scroll Highlighting disabled, ctrl-click opens the target link properly in only a new tab.

Thank you Glenn for letting me know, I'll add that to my bug list.

Add this bug to your list as well ....

I purposely select the option to NOT see the dirty laundry link. I like AW for the simple fact I can come here and get away from the daily grind and talk about some favorite subjects ..... without religion, politics and other bs. I also appreciate the moderator helping to remind posts of this subject matter to kindly take it to dirty laundry.

However, if you search in super searchelator, results from dirty laundry come up in those results. If you search for a username option, dirty laundry results come up also. Well stupid me, I willy nilly click on some search result and the next thing I know I'm all up in dirty laundry.

I'm thinking if someone had selected to not partake in this area, the search results should preclude these results. Or the very least, a message should remind the user they are going to be taken to this area even though they have opted out previously in there user profile options.

Simple enough to switch away if you find yourself in the brown area, nes ce?

Actually Arbi, no ........

the search results I referred to don't show as brown background. They are a light grey border color. Following a search result can then take you to the area you previously opted out. I've done this several times. It also can land you on threads with pictures or language, if you are not paying attention, ..... that caused a person to opt out in the first place.

With your logic why have an opt out method in the first place.

Mine shows color boxes related to the specific forum around the search results as well. I'll have to try and see if I can reproduce an instance when only gray boxes show.

Missing my point .....

To reproduce, go to super search, put in the username (username search box) of someone who posts to dirty laundry. Notice search results of posts that are in dirty laundry are not in brown, but in grey. (Bug #1)

Select one of the results that is in grey and it takes you to dirty laundry .... but the background is white (absence of color). (Bug #2)

Also notice that the top right info box .... just to the right of the big black subject bar .... should have the DL gif icon, but is missing. Instead it shows a pic broken link icon. (Bug #3)

***But my main point is, if a person opted out, then keep it that way, even in the search results. (Bug #4)

Opting out ..... includes not accidentally ending up in the opted out area. That seems to be more logical.

One fix would be to allow the search results, but the thread link greyed out so you can't continue to the DL thread .... if the user previously opted out of DL.

Hey Robert, perhaps in parallel, maybe a separate Search-a-lator option could be provided to include/exclude Dirty Laundry from the search results at the time of the search?

Almost without fail, whenever I search for something technical, one or more of the inline results will be a gigantic image post from one of the "Male Dominion" threads that matched a keyword... which can be a bit of a surprise to scroll through when you (or the people next to you in the store) aren't expecting it!

I did put my username in the searchbox and the DL posts show up as brown.

I think this is workable. If this has to change, it will take a lot of work and time from Robert to reprogram the site. Personally I think we can't ask that from him, he does enough, especially the little contribution a membership costs here.

Bud/sfh074, are you perhaps using a mobile device for browsing?  I don't see any of the points you detail when searching via desktop computer.  Robert has a different version of the site for mobile devices, perhaps what you see is specific to that?

Except I just now tried a Super Searchalator with my very old iPhone (there's a link up at the top right that says Turn Mobile Off so it is accessing the mobile version) and it looks the same as on my computer.  But that's using Firefox on the phone, which probably you're not.

Greyed out

swestoyz's profile picture

I believe this is what Bud is referring to.  If you have DL turned OFF within your profile, any search results from a DL post will pop up as grey.  There have been several times where a thread pops up in the search results as having been originated in DL that I didn't expect to pop up on my screen.  This can be awkward in a NSFW situation, which is one of the many reasons why I have DL turned off.  And I get it guys, I'm certainly not a prude, however some of us like to be able to surf AW while at work (or in the privacy of our homes) and not have to worry about sensitive content appearing.

Thanks Ben ....

Glad to get backup with this. I don't know how many times I've searched for something ..... to have stuff come up in the search results I can't un-see. And thank goodness I wasn't in mixed company when it happened.

So it appears the DL search results come up as grey when a user has their DL option turned off. And breaks other functionality that I pointed out in bugs 1-3.

And 3 people have made it known now .... in this thread, that AW search content came up that could have been a problem if at work or among mixed company. Sorry to keep pointing out the obvious, but maybe there needs to be a big disclaimer at the top of the search page that says, "Search at your own risk. Search results from this site could get you fired." Even though you proactively opted out.

Duhhh.  I didn't consider the glitches would (of course) occur when one has DL blocked.  That does need to be fixed.

The work around is simple, just choose one of the forums (for instance DeLuxe) and you will only see posts from that forum coming up.

The work around is simple????

Search one forum at a time, when there are 5, .... just to avoid the DL forum results? That defeats the purpose of looking for info across the site.

The solution is easy.

In the search SQL statement, check to see if user has opted out of DL.
If true, return WHERE forum_type < > DL.

Or

Display a checkbox on the search page if .... user UPGRADED_DAYS is > 0.
Checkbox text = "Omit DL results?"
Default of checkbox is unchecked.
In the search SQL statement,
if checkbox = true, return WHERE forum_type < > DL.

Done

Oh it is, is it? You have absolutely no clue what is involved in changing that particular program.

In the meantime the solution that Louis came up with (thank you Louis and everyone else in this thread for your help) will work just fine for you.

you do a fantastic job keeping this website running smoothly and I thank you for your efforts, any glitches are always resolved quickly by you. So, whatever is easiest for you to do is fine with me, and I’ll bet most other members too. I can easily scan over any threads and forums I don’t wish to see.

Just at thought, and I have no idea if this will be difficult, but would it be possible to change the programming so the searcher can check more than one forum for their search request?

If this is easily done, then those desiring to avoid DL in their search could check only those fields they want to search. Perhaps, even making the searcher having to always select the forums they want to search and just delete the “search all forums” option. Then if the user ends up in DL its either due to their desire to see it or their error in selection.

Eddie

It appears .....

that the DL search results are no longer returned in searches when a member has opted out of DL.

Ben, you can now search without fear of a NSFW situation. LOL

Robert, I have no clue? I've been a DBA for the past 21 years. Been consulting on MS-SSRS for the past 11. I didn't mean to step on any toes. Please accept my apologies if I did.

Thank you Bud, what I meant by that was changing the multiple database select statements was only one of many of the changes to that program needed to make it work properly, not to mention the time it takes testing, backup and promotion as well.

Bringing up this old OP to note an updated point on it ... I am at a friend's place for several days helping him move.

Using Chrome on one of his laptops.  Right-click and selecting Open Link In New Tab from the context menu works properly.  Holding CTRL and left-clicking, which is a shortcut vs. selecting from the context menu, does not work ... the link opens in the parent tab unless "Use Scroll Highlighting" is unchecked.
