Is the current Maytag dishwasher design (now being phased out) a pre-Whirlpool design or simply an older Whirlpool design?

Yes.  The literature I've seen indicates  the new one will have the self-cleaning filtering system that will include a 4-blade chopper though.

So the current design being phased out is a pre-2006 Maytag design?

The design being phased out is based upon Whirlpool tall-tub dishwashers, the pre-2006 would be an actual Maytag design before Maytag was acquired by Whirlpool.  The Maytag designed dishwasher was halted as part of the agreement.

Just had new Maytag dishwasher installed yesterday, first dishwasher I have had that is stainless steel. Boy it sure is dark in there for unloading. Have been used to white interiors and they were brighter. There should be a light in the back of the unit. Washes and dries well though.

wash arm action

Does it alternate wash arms, or do they run simultaneously? I'm interested in the new ones coming out shortly this year.
