Just a general question about this. I log into the site in my iPad at home (more often then my computer) and increasingly on my phone at work. The thing i’ve noticed is the time duration before I have to login again seems to be completely random. Sometimes after logging in if I am not on the site for two or three hours (sometimes a day or more) I’ll go back and need to login again, Yet other times, like now, I’ve been logged in through my phone for almost a week.

Can anyone explain this timing discrepancy?

Thanks!
Kevin

I’ve noticed that, let’s say I’m on my iPhone (which I am at the moment), then end up logging on on my laptop, then my iMac, regardless of time elapsed, when I come back here on my phone I’ll have to log in again. I will say the login cookies do seem to remain active longer on a computer than a mobile device.

Ultimately only Robert knows the full answer.

Mobile devices may have a shorter time period for retaining cookies and/or browser state.

I use ......

an android phone with chrome. I check the box in chrome to show as desktop site and have 3rd party cookies set to rejected. I never close the browser on my phone ..... and like clockwork AW will sign me out about once a week. I also view AW on a desktop and it signs me out every few days and seems more random.

I've only noticed the need to log in if I've been on a different network, such as accessing the site from somewhere other than at home.  First I'm asked to log in at the non-home location, then when I return home, I'm asked to log in again.  This strikes me as logical.

I can't speak to mobile access.  I'm not interested in squinting at my phone and scrolling/swiping all over the place.  I prefer a full keyboard and a big screen.

Once in a great while I am asked to log in via my iPhone:

I honestly haven't paid enough attention to when or why I get logged out.  I do not get logged out that often. The theory of having to log in when switched networks is something I will have to pay attention to though I don't think so in my case.  I switch on and off of a few different wifi networks in the course of a day (house has one, cars each have one and my home computer uses an ethernet connection) and I don't have to log in often enough for it to be that.  Now that I think about it I don't remember the last time I had to login from my computer that uses ethernet.  My phone and iPad do logoff from time to time.

I use pretty much apple products across the board (iPhone, iPad and MAC computer).  I don't know if that matters or not.  I notice that on all my devices I occasionally have to log in and other times it is still logged in from the last session.  I do have the login saved in my Keychain.  When I do have to log in it will autofill my credentials.  Not sure if that has anything to do with it either but I don't think it would.  All the autofill does is populate the fields I still have to click the login button.

I guess that's a long winded way of saying mine is so random it's hard to say what causes it.

I am the most illiterate tech savvy person ever. I log in to AW on my iPhone and I am logged in all week.

My MacBook... Once a weekLog in.

I’d guess that just about every time he does any type of update to the site it boots everyone.

I access daily from two desktop computers at different physical locations on different networks/ISPs.  They both auto log-out on a recurring basis, seems to be weekly ... usually on or about the same day since I re-log-in on or about the same day on both of them.

I rarely access from my iPhone, usually only if I have a photo on it that I want to place into a quick post (instead of pulling the photo out to my home computer).  It may or may not be logged-out depending on 1) whether I've closed Firefox vs. leaving it running in the background and 2) how long since the last access.  The log-in info is saved in FF so I need only click the Log In button.

Maybe a silly question

Why would you want to stay logged-in to any site that you are not actively working on? I never stay logged in unless in use. Is this using extra band width on this website? Are you using time and minutes on your plans staying logged in? Are you slowing down your computer by being logged into multiple sites? Inquiring minds want to know.

The system is setting cookies to remember the log-in for 7 days. If you find your being logged out sooner than 7 days your mobile browser is doing something to the cookie and that is pretty much out of my control from here. My phone and desktops all stay logged in for 7 days without issue.

I haven't made any changes to the site code in nearly two months so that isn't what is happening here.

And no it doesn't use any more bandwidth to stay logged-in vs being logged out.

As for me, why does the text become so small?

Here is often what I see:

(that is, it’s impossible to easily see and read, and even respond by cell-phone)

Speaking of small text

aquarius1984's profile picture
A couple of users seem to be using really difficult fonts and colours to write posts and this is not very mobile friendly or at all friendly on my eyes.

I don’t bother to read their posts anymore and scroll past them.

Whilst I get some people like to personalise posts I’m not so sure it should come at the cost of being totally unreadable to users.

There’s one post on this thread and a particularly annoying green small sized font used on others.

I see no point in beating around the bush about this, it is what it is it is. Would it make more sense to have one automatic font that works for all users to clearly see posts than allow for a little pointless individuality? It is an inclusive forum after all?

I figured it out

My browser, in this case “Safari” was set to “private browsing mode”. When turned “on” will not remember history, cookies, etc. i turned it off and now I’ve only had to log in once the last 2 days. 😁
