What cleaning products do you use to keep your home sparkling? What do you use to mop, dust, scrub, polish? Please, no laundry or dishwasher products.

My husband like to clean and I don't.....

chachp's profile picture

I am Very, Very lucky to be married to someone who loves to clean.  I told him years ago it's either him or we hire someone because I won't do it.  I hate to clean.  I do however clean in the kitchen because I spend a lot of time there.  I use very few products.  I use the dishmaster soap (in the faucet) to clean many items that don't go in the dishwasher.  I use Bar Keepers friend on my cookware to keep it looking like new.  I use a Boos oil on our cutting boards and a Boos stainless cleaner to clean the appliances.  It is the best stainless cleaner I have found and I think I have tried most of them.  I use a normal liquid dish soap for most other things.

The first picture is under the kitchen sink and the products I use.  The foil is to keep the hose from the dishmaster from getting caught on the pipes below.  The second picture is what he uses to clean the house.  As you can see "he loves him" some Pine-Sol!!  He really doesn't use that many products and the house always smells clean.

Products

Pine-Sol Lemon scent is our main concentrated all-purpose cleaner.
However, we do use quite a bit of Method's Honeycrisp Apple All-Purpose spray.
Name brand Windex only on glass surfaces.
Our sinks always have Clorox Clean-Up with Bleach spray.
Toilets we religiously use Clorox Toilet Bowl Cleaner with Bleach. Smells great.
Generally we use Pledge or Endust after we "dust" our surfaces that need it. We don't use Swiffer BS or rags to dust, but instead our Miele vacuum with the horsehair brush. This keeps the dust from spreading and works really well.
One secret I have is Bar Keepers Friend in powder form. It keeps our stainless steel pots looking like new. It is also useful on our electric stovetop. Works great on chrome exhaust tips too!
One new discovery is the Aldi steam cleaner. It works wonders on miscellaneous things like baseboards, bathroom floors, electric stovetops, cleaning around the base of the toilet, around the toilet seat, and faucets.

Well my husband David is like Ralph’s husband from reply #2, he likes to do the cleaning, although I’m not adverse to doing it. I do the laundry, grocery shopping and all the cooking and baking.

For the laundry I use Gain Original scent liquid, Gain Dryers sheets and Oxi Clean White Revive. For the dishes I use Palmolive Original Ultra liquid and Barkeepers friend for the stainless steel pots and pans. I found these wonderful dish clothes at Walmart have a nylon net backing, and they are great for hand washing the dishes and scrub pans so well that I seldom need to us anything else to clean them. We keep a bar of plain old Ivory bar soap at each sink for hand washing.

David uses Lysol liquid cleaner for the floors and Windex Vinegar formula for the windows, Ajax scouring powder for the sinks and toilets. We also keep a box of SOS pads on hand for stubborn spots on pans, and to clean the oven, along with Barkeepers Friend, I only use Easy Off if the oven is really dirty, which reminds me, I need to give the oven a go over again soon. Oh, and lest I forget, David uses Swifters for dusting.

We are both very neat people, alway pick things up so there is no clutter and our house is spotlessly clean at all times, could be ready to show for sale any day of the week. When you’ve had to work hard to buy a home and everything that goes into it you appreciate it and want to keep it nice.

Eddie

Sure seems to be a common thread around here.  Has anyone tried the liquid version?  I haven't.

We have recently (about 6 months ago) discovered the Astonish range of cleaners at our UK shop, and we are totally hooked!
My fiance is also more of the cleaner than I am (I'm the laundry and dishwasher fanboy) but I do help out with the cleaning.
Our cleaning cupboard consists of:
- Handy Andy cream cleaner (unilever cream cleaner, best on the market, SA staple in any home. I think it goes as Cif in Europe) this is useful for the stove, and tough stains on counters or appliances or the bathroom.

- Astonish kitchen cleaner spray
- Astonish Multi surface spray (we alternate between the kitchen and the multi surface)
- Astonish anti bacterial cleaner. Odourless disinfectant that we use on our cutting boards
- Astonish Oven Spray. Great odourless gel spray that works wonders in the oven and on roasting trays with burnt on bits.
- Astonish Grease Lifter - my favourite product ever! Amazing at cleaning any oily or greasy mess, like splatter off the stove, pots and pans that have need extra TLC, and even oily stains on clothes. It has a clean citrus/bicarb scent which just smells so clean, and we use this quite a bit around the house, and its a great cleaner for any tough stain really.
- Astonish bathroom cleaner
- For the toilets, we just buy which ever toilet bowl cleaner is on sale when we need, although I do prefer the gels to the thick bleaches, and love anything with a citrus scent.
- We alternate between Pledge and Plush Supreme furniture polishes.

We have a steam mop for the floors, but if we do feel like we need to do a wet soapy mop, then I normally just use either Handy Andy or dishwashing liquid, or just washing powder in a bucket of hot water. But since getting the steam mop, we rarely wet mop unless we feel we really have to

Sorry to mention laundry products.
Every single thing that I clean is as follows:
A pan of boiling hot water + a cupish of powdered tide + a couple shakes of borax. I use it to scrub rooms from top to bottom with a sponge. Mop the floor, everything. Afterwards I redo everything with just plain water. Then furniture, countertops, cabinets, appliances big and small, vinyl floors, and a lot of other things get a layer of carnuba car wax. It helps keep things nice and shiny, as well as making them last longer.

Oliger, no need to apologise for mentioning Tide. It's not necessarily a laundry product. There is a version sold specifically as a floor and all-purpose cleaner. I keep intending to buy a box, but haven't yet.

Talking about Tide powder ......

try this on oily or greasy spots on the driveway. Take Tide powder and make a wet paste. Heavily cover the oily spot with the paste and then cover with plastic wrap or plastic bag so it won't dry out. Let it set for 24 hours and then hose down with a heavy stream of water. It may take a couple of treatments, but it really does a number lifting the oil from concrete. If the oil or grease is a really old spot on the driveway, take WD40 and saturate the spot. Let that work for an hour, then come back and use the paste as mentioned above. You'll be surprised just how well it works.

Hob (Cooktop): Punch (Henkel).
Toilets: Usually Domestos (Unilever)
Bathroom surfaces : Cif (Unilever) cream cleaner.
Polishes: Murphy’s floor wax lavender. Bees wax furniture polish.

Forgot a few things

In laundry in add Ammonia to nearly every wash
For air freshener I use only Febreze Fabric in Downy AF scent, and Febreze Air in Downy AF as well.
For dishwashing soap I recently fell in love with Dawn Advanced (Costco exclusive).

I like simplification, keep things simple, and try to stick with basics.

Bar Keepers Friend for some pots and pans (copper bottoms) and kitchen counters, sink. Clorox spray bleach for kitchen counters and bathrooms. Bon Ami powder for bathtubs, sink, & toilet. It gives a brighter shine to the porcelain.
Weiman Glass Cook Top cleaner & polish for smooth top surface stove.

409 and 409 Carpet Cleaner spray foam for tough stains (rarely use the stuff). [I also make my own stain remover for laundry and other uses, works better than just about anything I've bought. In a spray bottle: combine 1 part water, 1 part good dish soap and 1 part sudsing ammonia.]

Windex Glass Cleaner (mirrors & windows).

Favor furniture wax or Pledge (wipes). Scotts Liquid Gold to treat and clean dried out wood furniture.

The worst thing I have to use is DuraSeal floor cleaner wax to treat wood floor. Try to only have to use that once a year or so, extremely strong odor that makes me sick. We have the old style floors, teak parquet. When I ordered the last gallon of it, had to pay hazardous shipping....so that told me all I needed to know!!

BIZ? I haven't see BIZ in years. I remember it was used when I was a kid though.

DOW Scrubbing Bubbles, I have tried it a few times, still not very impressed. Nothing beats a scrub sponge with Ajax or Comet.

1) Steam, lots of steam, I love my Karcher steam cleaner for almost everything. i mean, I REALLY love it, I love it more than sliced bread, more than my own life, more than chocolate (no, wait... I love chocolate more)

2) Scrubbing bubbles shower cleaner (that clear spray that has a lovely scent to spray after the shower and (try to) prevent hard water stains (at least it minimizes the problem.

3) CLR

4) Bar Keeper's Friend (The powder and the spray versions)

5) Bruce Hardwood and laminate cleaner

6) Bissell Swiffer Steamboost pads (lavender) I use them with the Bissell Symphony and it works great.

7)Bissell I forgot the name of the liquid that you mix with water and put in the spinwave. I use it go tive the final touch on my laminate floors.

8) Windex

9) Rubbing alcohol (as higher degree as possible., great to remove marks.

I also have one of those pump bottles with a mixture of Lysol concentrate (that super strong and stinky thing, just a few drops), Grease relief (just a little bit) and water. It works better than 409 as a multi purpose cleaner.

10) Easy off Professional oven cleaner (No I never use it in the oven) but it's great to pretreat pans that are horribly burnt. spray, let it work for 2 minutes only and rinse very well before it goes to the dishwasher.

I didn't know this existing until I read it here.  I've never seen it in the grocery store but they had it at Home Depot yesterday.  I bought a bottle and I really like it.  I used it on the kitchen sink and it's amazing how well and how quickly it worked.  When I use the powder I have to rinse and rinse.  This seemed to rinse off fairly quickly.

I like anything that smells like Clorox. I especially like their spray cleaner. I wish they made bath & shower soap.

Has anyone used Fuller Brush Co. or Stanley products recently? My mom used to order them many years ago and I was wondering on their current state of effectiveness/quality.

Due to the fact that my child is allergic, I try to use organic detergents such as Young Living or TriNova

I keep things kind of simple.. I think?

stan's profile picture
I don't have a giant arsenal of cleaning products, and now that I think of it..really no commercially made spray on products.
Lye soap is used for ALL kinds of general cleaning and degreasing.
Bon Ami
BarKeepers Friend
Vinegar
Clear ammonia
TSP occasionally used to soak & clean out stainless steel coffee pot.
Liquid Gold for furniture (pourable version)
I dont use Comet or Ajax cleanser, I dont think either bleach like they use to.
Instead, for something like cleaning my old porcelain kitchen sink.. I pour a little Clorox (splash less) and some Bon Ami. Scrub let sit, and rinse.
I live in a old house, so if I see rust (old bathroom sink) I go for BarKeepers Freind
I have a bottle of Citra Solve concentrate that I rarely use.. Maybe use straight (little on a cloth) to remove tree sap.
So I guess I've gone kind of green? Just some basic chemicals that have been around for 100 years, no artificial Scents

I use a lot of Zep chemicals, their toilet bowl cleaner, their tube and tile cleaner. I don’t remember what brand of cleaner I’ve used on the glass cooktop though... and I like using the spray can glass cleaner with either newspaper or packing paper to get that streak free clean.
