Seems both were popular in UK at around same time, with Persil having a slight lead in sales. Where there others? Did testing and or experience prove one was better than other on wash day?

Oh and was this "new" Persil from 1997 still a soap powder?

Back then..

A bit before my time, but before the 70s, I believe some of the others that were around Rinso, Omo, Luvil and Daz (only Daz being the one still around)

In terms of brands (can only really put the one's we still have now), Persil is the oldest - coming in 1909, think Daz is the oldest detergent coming in around 1953, then came Ariel in 1968 as the worlds first "biological" detergent, Bold came in 1974 - this was the one P&G positioned for Automatic users (keeping Ariel for the Twintub and Top load users), but as time has gone on, Ariel is the one that is positioned as their number 1/flagship and Bold for the rest of its life since 1983 has been an "all in one", 2 and even 3 in 1 product.

Persil has always been the UK's market leader, probably due to the heavy and consistent marketing campaign that has always been based around cleaning and care (sure there is a video somewhere - saying it's about being a good mother, happy families etc); it's just really well known - even Victoria Beckham is famously quoted for her saying she "wanted to be as famous as Persil automatic" in her biography,

Fairy snow (which is no longer around, it's just Fairy now) was a soap based powder, always propositioned for fine and delicate fabrics and "gentle" cleaning (this is what remains true for Fairy today - in its detergent form it has only ever been available in non biological, and is, and always has been aimed at being the laundry brand for newborns and children and anyone concerned with sensitive skin, it has conditioning agents (but not advertised as an actual softener) and it does seem to make clothes soft and fluffier. The name Fairy is on probably on over 40 products - detergents of all formats, fabric softeners, stain remover powder and sprays, washing up liquids and dishwasher tablets, and at one time (around 15 years ago) on a household cleaning soap bar (the green one) and also a personal/beauty soap bar.
