Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a new dishwasher and I need some advice.

My criteria :
Budget of roughly 1000$ CAD
SS tub
3rd rack
*Built-in food disposer (I don't mind the noise)

*I have only owned DWs with food disposers and until now assumed I need one because I don't pre-rinse my dishes, but reading the threads on this forum is making me change my mind on the subject (thanks for that).

After doing my research I ended up shortlisting a GE and a Maytag model. A local salesman and other reliable sources have also recommended Bosch dishwashers so I also found this 300 series model (it does not have a food disposer, but again that's not a show stopper)

GE GDT665SGNWW
www.geappliances.ca/en/pr...

Maytag MDB8959SKW
www.maytag.ca/en_ca/kitch...

Bosch 300 Series SHEM53Z32C
www.bosch-home.ca/en/prod...

All three models are roughly the same price. I am hesitating because, while the Bosch brand has a very good reputation in reliability, the model at this price point has less interseting features that the competitors (i.e. only 2 plastic wash arms while the GE has 3 and the Maytag has 4 SS ones, cutlery basket sold separately). In other words, am I missing something here ? Am I just paying for the brand ?

Any thoughts ? Thanks in advance !

Dave

Best New DW

The Maytag is the best choice, GE just does not cut it performance and reliability wise.

the Bosch will do a good job but it needs too much babying, [ filter cleaning, cheap racks and wheels, and generally cheap construction [ plastic wash arms are the tip of the ice burg ]

The GE's Pirranah  hard food disposer is a misrepresentation.  The "disposer" is AFTER the filter system that traps all the food particles.  the Maytag is their brand new model and design!!!  I'd select that one if the 3.

I've owned two different Bosch dishwashers in different homes and never had a problem with either one; however, cleaning the filters can get nasty sometimes.  Bosch also doesn't offer a heated dry option.  That was fine most of the time but plastic never came out dry.

I now have a 2019 Maytag model with hard food disposer, and I'm very pleased with it.  It's also very quiet.  I would love to hear someone offer a personal review on the new model.

As noted earlier, pass on the GE.

BOSCH - Cleaning the Filter

chachp's profile picture

I have a BOSCH 800 series and for the most part I am happy with how it cleans, the racks, etc.  The racks slide really easily and it's very quiet.

The inline water heater went out in the first year.  From what I've read it could be my fault because I have mechanically softened water and was using Cascade pods.  This resulted in a lot of sudsing and from what I read that scenario can cause the heater to burn out.  When I was using Cascade I had to clean the filter about once a week and if I let it go too long it smelled.  I switched over to the Miele tabs and have eliminated the sudsing for the most part but the really odd thing is I hardly every have to clean the filter anymore.  Hard to believe the tabs would make a difference but they seem to have.

I'd buy another BOSCH.

I bought a Bosch 300 series 7 months ago and I am Happy :) with it! I use finish quantum with jetdry - Everything comes out clean and dry. I was using cascade pods but went by Bosch recommendation to use finish. I mostly use the Auto cycle but sometimes use the speed60 cycle! I use the flatware 3rd top rack - I didn't think I would like it but I got used to it and really like the extra room it gives me in the bottom rack!
Best of Luck whatever you decide.

I have no complaints with the Bosch Ascenta I installed last year. It works really well and the few times I've looked at the filter there's nothing in there. I scrape but never rinse. For $500 Cdn I have zero complaints. It's way better than the two previous Kitchenaid pieces of shite.

Our next door neighbor had the similar piece of shite Kitchenaid as us. She'd just repaired hers for the 2nd time in the fall to the tune of $200 when it broke again over Christmas while family from the UK was visiting. Her husband being not very handy and not wanting to wait for an installer she asked me to go help her pick out a new machine.. She bought that very one you're looking at and I installed it. I think she paid about $700 Cdn for it at Lowes after the current rebate thing. She really likes it, particularly the 3rd rack and told me she's never had a dishwasher that cleans so well, way better than her Kitchenaid.. I tend to agree.

I bought a Bosch 800 series DW on Dec 30, 2018, so a year and three months ago and I have been very happy with it! I clean the filter about every week, sometimes every two weeks and majority of the time it’s not too bad.

It replaced a KitchenAid dishwasher that had a food grinder/chopper, but the KA always re-depositing little “yibbles” on anything in the corners of the upper rack, if I didn’t scrape everything and lightly rinse at minimum.

With this Bosch I only remove / scrape large food particles and NEVER rinse. Small food bits go right in with the dishes, rice, small pieces of veggies, etc. etc. it must flush the filter during drain, because I never find any of that stuff in the filter.

Kevin

P.S. I bought my dishwasher at the Sears outlet and got a great price, only paid $550 US when retail on this model is about $1100 US.

Plastic versus metal

petek's profile picture
I can say this, there isn't an all metal Kitchenaid home mixer on the market that can come close to kneading dough as well as a plastic bodied/bowl Bosch Universal mixer. That's my story and I'm stickin to it LOL.

Bosch versus Maytag

I personally would go with another Bosch. Ours is a little over 2 years old and has never let us down. Yes, it has a slight learning curve as far as loading and cleaning the filter, but results are incredible. The Maytag is a new design, which is interesting and intriguing, but I find that the new Whirlpool machines run for a very long period of time. It has not been able to prove itself yet either. However, I would actually like to have a new machine running in a members house! LOL. Ultimately, go and look at both machines in person. Check for build quality and design issues you may run into with loading dishes, etc.

Bosch cycle times

revvinkevin's profile picture

By the way, the cycle times on my 800 series Bosch, at least for the auto, normal and heavy cycles, are just over two hours. It’s 2.5 hours with the “sanitize“ option selected. This is when the rinse aid reservoir is full. When it runs out the cycle time is increased by 15 minutes.

Personally I don’t care that the cycle times are over two hours, at least not anymore. I simply start the dishwasher before I go to bed, or when I leave for work in the morning. Even if I run it during the day, it’s so darn quiet it doesn’t matter at all, even if I’m standing next to it in the kitchen cooking I can barely hear it running!

BOSCH cycle times

chachp's profile picture

I'm a geek.  I taped the times to the inside of the cabinet so I could refer to them as needed.  These times are for the BOSCH 800 series.  I mostly use the Auto cycle with Sanitize and Extra Dry.

Cycle Chart

Not geeky at all. I find myself resorting back to it often as well.
Cycle times vary a bit at our house with my 300 series. The heavy cycle is the fastest despite using the highest temperatures. It takes about 2 hours to 2 hours 10 minutes. the Auto cycle takes 2 hr 10 min to 2 hr 30 min depending on soil level. The Normal cycle takes about 2 hr 10 min to 2 hr 20 min.
The Heavy cycle using at minimum a 150ºF wash cleans like you wouldn't believe.

Deciding between these models myself and wondering if the OP has a follow up on what he purchased and his experience. I'm leaning toward the Maytag but I have the older model of this same one now and while I was very happy with it for the first 6-7 years, I haven't been that impressed in the last 2 years. Now the control panel just died so I have to replace it ASAP.

So my current choices for in stock availability are:
MDB8959SKW
GDT665SGNWW

TIA for your input!

Better New DW

combo52's profile picture

I would agree the MT will likely be a better DW in Many ways, as a service technician we are throwing away a lot of GE DWs that are less than 5 years old, the main Motors are one of the big problems.

Wondering

What lead you to lean towards a Maytag or GE rather than a Bosch or other higher rated machine? For myself I look for something reliable and has excellent washing results and neither of those do per CR and that's why I went with a Bosch

GE KA Bosch

We had a GE with the detergent dispenser and piranha, a KitchenAid with the 1st gen Cleanwater Wash, and now a Bosch 800 with CrystalDry. It’s only been a week with the Bosch, but I really loved that KitchenAid. I assume the Maytag and KAs are close-cousins.

The GE's detergent dispenser failed... twice and then the controls caught fire.

The KA was fantastic - no filter to clean and everything was spotless, the lower and middle racking options were fantastic, but the third rack had too tiny tines for silverware; it was putzy. Cascade Platinum caused build-up in the SatinGlide tracks. The KA's dynamic wash arm failed after five years and I found it was leaking on our wood floor under the unit, but it was SO quiet, had great options and was superb at cleaning.

The Bosch is clearly amazing at cleaning. CrystalDry is remarkable for not using any electric heater; it dries as well as the KA with heated dry - but I think you need to step up to the 800 for that feature. The Bosch's middle rack is not as flexible or spacious as the KA. (I wanted a 3rd rack silverware drawer, so skipped the latest KA (and Maytag), which was disappointing.) My only complaint so far about the Bosch is that the middle rack wash jets are so powerful that plastics jump around, flip over, and are noisy. An odd complaint, but that’s what I’ve experienced in a week.

Oh, and almost everyone’s manuals suck these days.

Availability was a nightmare. We were on the fence with stepping up to a Miele, but waiting another month or two and spending 30-50% more didn’t seem to make a lot of sense.

Kenmore version

I have the Kenmore version of the Bosch here. It has dirty dishes in it. I'm sure it will do a great job cleaning.

dishwasher cycle times

I use the smart wash on my Bosch-built Kenmore, which takes 2 hours and 24 minutes, because I have activated dry assist which I prefer. It's basically a heat dry cycle without the heating element exposed.

My TOL KitchenAid has needed a main motor replacement, leaking repair from a bad float gasket/seal, flimsy rack, rack clips that keep coming off, etc. So glad the big stuff was under warranty. However, the drying performance sub-par with it not being able to dry even hard surfaces. I bought it partially because KA promoted forced-air drying. The drying circulation fan is asthmatic at best. And yes, I wish I had purchased a machine that masticates food particles while draining.

Get the Maytag

It’s the closest thing you can get to a food disposer without having a food disposer.

Maytag - but one thing......... if history repeats itself the rinse aid dispenser will start to leak around the 7th to 8th year (give or take).. My 2014 Maytag is still great except for that...This has happened to me with 2 whirlpool built machines around the same time-frame so I can only assume this will continue to happen with their design...

Of the 3 the order I would choose would be
1. Maytag
2. Bosch
3. GE

Today I ran a load using smart wash with turbo clean which took 2 hours and 40 minutes. It did a great job cleaning and drying.
