Hey Folks, Usually when either Cory and I find something, the frequency of finding something seems to be once every other month. For some strange reason, either the stars have aligned right over Iowa or good Karma has come our way (thanks Earl), as another dream machine surfaced this weekend. We both frequent the local scrap yard and tour three or four local appliance shops once a week to see what is on it's way to meet it's maker, but 19 times out of 20, the SUV's are parked in the drive way empty. Now, almost 2 years ago (about when we found this site), we had seen a KD-12 at the scrap yard, but we didn't have a chance to pick it up. Fast forward two years, and yet another SS KitchenAid KD-12 is delivered on our door step, behind our favorite appliance shop. Cory knows this DW on my dream machine list, and mentioned that I should pick it up today over lunch before the scrap boys could get their grimy hands on it. So, at 11:15, I ran out to the parking lot, jumped in the Tahoe, and race over to the shop. Low and behold, there it was. I found the front cap nearby next to some plastic-fantastic late 90's Kenmore DW, and did a quick one over. I could just hear it say - "can I take a ride in the back of the Tahoe?" My response - "Buckle up!" After some wonderful customer service, I had this beauty secured in the back of the Tahoe with the help of a friendly attendant. He even grabbed a cart for us to use - how nice! |

I think the motor is possibly shot, and it would need a good cleaning as well. Also, the wire racks have seem some better days as well, but there is no need to complain. I also love huge door, and the gravity drain this model has under that huge drain solenoid! And that beast of a wash arm - man, that cast iron lug must weigh 10 pounds! It also has this little basket for the dishwashing soap - I'm not sure if it is original, but is cool none-the-less. Maybe it'll get some attention later this winter - till then, one more saved from the scrapper! Ben |

Very cool! These are one of my favorite vintage dishwashers. You'll be shocked at the cleaning power of the "Wall of Water" that shoots out of that cast iron wash arm - and how fast it moves! The water flume is cool too - sprays fan shaped pattern over the inside of the machine. The wire-mesh detergent basket goes in the silverware basket - sits on the 'rails' of the smaller, rectangular compartments toward the inside. It keeps the detergent high and dry during the flush/purge cycle before the main wash. |
