Because people were concerned about saving money on heating the water, the water bill and buying detergent.  The savings could help to justify the expenditure to buy the washer.  It was  all about economizing, not ecology.

 

Most folks were thrifty in the 50’s.

Very true Eddie, Most homemakers were also horrified at how much water, detergent and hot water automatics used compared to wringer washers used the do the weekly laundry already.

 

This is why when the original WP-KM automatics came out they ALL had the Suds-Saver builtin, it was the odd machine that did not have the Suds-Saver feature.
