Love the old food ads, keep up the good work. I wonder what Swifts potted meat in the can was?

I have an idea that the Swift potted meat was something like Underwood Deviled Ham spread.

My pleasure Doug! Some years back I read the ingredient label of a potted meat spread from Armour at the supermarket. You don't want to know what's in there. I imagine it was a better quality product back then, but that last label I read had nothing but garbage meat-by-products.

#37

I always love these adds and the appeal that they had. Now #37 to me is not appealing in the least. It looks like almost a raw chicken whole sitting atop vegies and noodles. Never mind how are you going to cut and serve this without it going all over the table or counter. Don't think this was a big seller.

Charcoal seasoning intreagues me...

scoots's profile picture
Is this something sprinkled on meat to make it taste like it had been cooked over live charcoal... or ... something sprinkled on live charcoals to make the meat more flavorful?

"Charcoal seasoning is a simple spice blend consisting of activated charcoal, MSG, and a handful of basic seasonings like onion powder and garlic powder. Charcoal seasoning blends often contain salt as well."

Hmmmm...I have a single Pillsbury crust in the freezer, cream cheese that needs to get used, and a bottle of ReaLemon in the fridge. Looks like I’m making the Lemon Cheese Pie tomorrow!

That recipe caught my eye also. Sounds good and easy.

Tom-- I made the Lemon Cheese Pie using an unroll-and-bake crust. Posted the results in the 'Shelter At Home' thread.  My bastardized version is so easy to make and it tastes great.

I love the differences in flavor balancing between today's recipes and those from the 1940s - 1950s. Really makes you realize that what we like about how food tastes evolves over time.

Louie, this one hit a home run. I hope you never run out of these great vintage ads with recipes! Thanks for keeping the threads going.

The pics of food from back then just looks more appealing than today's.

Those green tomato pickles in the McCormick-Schilling ad sound good; I've not had any in many years. I'll have to give that recipe to my sister. She grows lots of tomatoes every summer, and has plenty of green ones to do something with.

Stokely's had tomato catsup in the 1956 ad, but I've not seen it for decades. Anyone know when it was discontinued?

That Pet Mile-High Lemonade Pie is good. My Aunt Doris used to make it when we were there. In fact, I remember eating it at their house on Peterson Dr. in Jackson, MS, which would have been between '59 and '61.
