I have a Maytag Neptune KA407 vintage 1973 and it needs a new timer. I think the new timer part # is a 2-5001 (WP205001)...Not sure how to start removing the old timer? How does the knob come off? Any advice would sure be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

The little silver disc on the knob pry's out. Then you will see a small clip that comes off, and then you can remove the knob, and dial. Should be a small spring behind the dial. Then there are I think 2 bolts behind the dial that hold the timer in place.

This is the timer you need.  It is part number 204889 (2-4889).

That's a nice, versatile machine.  I think almost 50 years is an impressive run for its original timer.  The NOS (new old stock) timer linked above should be good for another 50 years.  An excellent deal at $1/year and well worth it for keeping such a faithful -- indeed dependable -- machine going.

I have a 204499-2 Kingston timer in my DD 806 (original to the machine) that I've secretly wanted to die for 12 years so I can throw in a 204499-1 Mallory. That damn Kingston will probably end up outlasting me.

Thank you very much for the eBay tip. I just ordered it. It seems it's no longer available at some of the other parts stores elsewhere. Once again FORUM folks are the best!

This is wiring diagram for the A407.  It might be useful in hooking up the new timer.

I've wondered the same thing - mainly because I'd like to make one, but one unit certainly wouldn't justify the time that it took to design and produce...
