Rich received a spur of the moment call from his friend Mr S. who runs the scrapyard in PA. So with only a moments notice, we were off on another junkyard quest! Mr. S. was a little under the weather, so his grandson met us in the yard to unlock the gate for us, and gave us free reign throughout the whole yard for the whole day! What a treat. It was a beautiful fall day in PA, with just a little dampness, but we didnt let that dampen our delight in scrounging thru all the great stuff. There were whole loads of new arrivals..........Oh, and the van in the left corner was NOT a junkyard item, but my poor old trusty van, that has now hauled hundreds of appliances ready and able to do the job again..........

Mr S. must have been anticipating our arrival, as Drive Thur Order Here appliance guys. Rich, having been given strict orders to save all 1-18's, placed and order here for at least one fabulous 1-18........

On our way in, there were mostly newer items, but this mid 50's GE single door refrig was a stand out........if it only had been a little nicer I would have picked it up......

The famous GE logo........in copper.........

Freezer door.......what style!

This could have easily been brought back to life, it was mostly complete, I just didnt need another refrig.......

Post# 158000 , Reply# 6   9/30/2006 at 18:47 (6,388 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

A few moments later, Rich yelled over to me something about a Hotpoint stack set. I told him I didnt think Hotpoint ever made a stack set..........duh! Turns out this is what he meant..................Oh, yes, and there was a Maytag almond set pushed in next to it.....one must wonder how in the world junkyard guys unload their inventory......?????

Post# 158001 , Reply# 7   9/30/2006 at 18:49 (6,388 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

Going into the 40 acres of appliances, there is a BIG mountain of heaps of washers and dryers on the left. Rich saw something on top of the pile and decided to make a Mt Everest climb........

Post# 158002 , Reply# 8   9/30/2006 at 18:50 (6,388 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

Yeah a 1-18! Peek a Boo, its a new fangled style pulsator!.............

Post# 158003 , Reply# 9   9/30/2006 at 18:52 (6,388 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

Over on the right of the yard, in kind of the Mesa area, we found this fabulous Kenmore dryer. Mr. S's yard has always proven a haven for dryers and this trip was no exception. Dryers are important too, of course, because not only can they be just as wonderful as a vintage washer, but they help to complete a Matched Set!..........

Post# 158004 , Reply# 10   9/30/2006 at 18:54 (6,388 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

A few more feet away, was this wonderful Westinghouse front loader. It was a complete washer, Im using was in the past tense, since Rich and I almost completely stripped it for parts. It even had the Weigh To Save and a light in the tub!...........

Post# 158005 , Reply# 11   9/30/2006 at 18:57 (6,388 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

Well, looks like Rich's order for a fabulous 1-18 was received........a TOL 1-18 with Lighted Controls! Yeah!!!! It turned out to be in excellent condition, and perhaps Rich can later post about the one unusual thing we found on the bottom of this washer........it certainly was a first for both of us......The problem with this washer, and many of the items here is that they become "land locked". "Land Locked" means that many items were placed around them in succession, and there is no easy way to get them out. It took us a little while to MOVE many of the items just to get access to this wonderful find........

Post# 158006 , Reply# 12   9/30/2006 at 19:00 (6,388 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

Around the corner from the TOL 1-18, was this Frigidaire dryer that looked like the match to the washer. They almost certainly had come into the yard as a set. But a closer look, pointed out to me by Rich, shows that this dryer is actually a WCI Frigidaire. It was very interesting since the washer was a GM 1-18, and its mate was a WCI!!!

Going a little deeper into the flatlands, we spotted, again "land locked", this wonderful Maytag dryer.

Post# 158008 , Reply# 14   9/30/2006 at 19:02 (6,388 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

Even more wonderful was finding it to be one of the first "Electronic Control" Maytags.........

Post# 158009 , Reply# 15   9/30/2006 at 19:03 (6,388 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

Off to the side but very interesting and complete was a wonderful Tappan electric range, with the warming tray on top. Boy, what a shame to leave this behind.......its condition was extremely nice........sigh,

As to be expected, there are lots and lots, rows and rows of modern plastic junk! Here are just a few of them: "Amana Row"...........

Post# 158012 , Reply# 17   9/30/2006 at 19:06 (6,388 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

Back in the main driveway, a little farther down, we found this complete 40" Flair range, circa 1962. Rich and I together parted most of this out, for extra parts for the Flair I have in my kitchen........

Post# 158013 , Reply# 18   9/30/2006 at 19:08 (6,388 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

Another "land locked" item, but interesting was this early 70's Kelvinator dryer. I had hoped that maybe the matching washer was in the yard somewhere, but none in sight.......

Post# 158014 , Reply# 19   9/30/2006 at 19:09 (6,388 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

Rich, in another festive mood climbs the next pile of appliances on the upper 40 of the yard.........

Post# 158015 , Reply# 20   9/30/2006 at 19:10 (6,388 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

This place is really beyond belief. The eye just cannot take it all in at once, there is so much there. Being allowed access here is so much fun, even if just to browse.....

Post# 158016 , Reply# 21   9/30/2006 at 19:11 (6,388 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

Towards the end of the day, Rich and I start to get the Frigidaire 1-18 ready to removal.........

Post# 158018 , Reply# 22   9/30/2006 at 19:15 (6,388 days old) by filterflo (Chicago Area)

One other thing I found on the way in was this wonderful Singer Sewing Machine. Its very similar to a Singer FeatherWeight, I will get it cleaned up and tested after I unload all the parts Ive collected here today. Thanks to my good friend Rich Trainguy for letting me go with him to this great place......junkyards are the most fun!

That White-Westinghouse washer is a Dual-Tumble, early-90's vintage. Yes, they DID make them in a full-backsplash version!

Post# 158029 , Reply# 26   9/30/2006 at 19:58 (6,388 days old) by westytoploader ()

Either that, or circa-1988 3-belt, right before the transition. That control panel looks WAY 90's though, especially the "wide" timer dial like on mine (a SpaceMates machine). They all had tub lights, but I'm not sure if the DT ever had a Weigh-To-Save door.

What an interesting day in the junkyard - as always! Jimmy, when you get a chance, would you post a pic of the sewing machine? I haven't seen a lot of the later small Singers.

Can't wait to see what the mystery is in the bottom of the machine...

What was the model number on the 1-18 washer with the lighted control panel? I couldn't read all the dial selections, but it looks a lot like my WIC-A.

Anthony all the TOL 1-18s taht had console lights, the controls were all the same. I've never seen any variance.

That looks like alot of fun! I like going to the junk yard to grab stuff for cars, but I really would like to find a yard near me that has old appliances! I have yet to find one!

Looks like a fun trip.
But what did you find on the bottom of the 1-18?
If that dump was down here, you'd better be wearing snake boots. You might find a rattler or two in some of those machines!

I wish I was along for the fun. I can only imagine the thrill of finding something exciting around every corner. Glad you found a 1-18, and such a nice one. Hope it works with no problems. Can't wait to hear what was in the bottom of it.

What a beaut, that Kenmore dryer but I think I will loose sleep thinking about that poor Tappan range and GE refrigerator that didn't make it. :-0

Jimmy and Rich ~

What a great place to spend a beautiful fall day! Great idea on grabbing good parts of machines you can't save. I saw that exact Kelvinator dryer last week - looked very interesting! So, what was the surprise on the 1-18?

So Let's Get to the Bottom of Things......

trainguy's profile picture
When we first shook the tub, it felt totally different from any other 1-18. Only the top of the tub moved and in such a way that with very little resistance, it banged into the sides of the cabinet violently. I fininshed going over the washer today and it really shows very little signs of use. I'm positive they didn't use it much because of the problem with the spin. Wanna know why and what was in the bottom?

That's Right.....

they left in the shipping block! Once I removed it and cleaned up the machine, it agitates AND spins perfectly. I have never seen a 1-18 shipping block before. So here's another shot of it removed.

kinda sad

johnb300m's profile picture
it's kinda sad that all this "crap" is just laying around, rusting into oblivion. talk about a sore on the face of the land. i know it's awesome to have some of these old machines laying around for parts, but the really old, crappy stuff that's basically twisted metal at the bottom of the piles; is there any way this stuff can be recycled into new, useful machines somehow? what a waste of resources if you ask me, and polution to the environment.
