I found a whirlpool wringer washer. So after 2 flights and a 12 hour drive home in the rental car. She’s here and going to start restoring her this weekend. I picked it up from a guy was out in the country that was going to turn her into yard art.
But after plugging it in everything ran great. Until smoke started coming out from under her skirt, any ideas as to why ? Here’s some pics too. | ||

WP WW Nice find Chris, looks like a low use machine that was not used much or in a very long time.
It was built in the Clyde Ohio factory the 40th week of 1964.
About the only thing that could smoke on this washer is the motor, if it was just a tiny bit of smoke it might e OK, but if it smoked a lot or does it again the motor winding insulation may have failed from years of being stored in a damp environment in which case you may need to track down another motor.

Thanks everyone, and John for the date, so awesome..
It also has a switch to turn on the motor, like a toggle switch, ive never seen one of those before? Im going to clean it up some and plug it in today and see if it smokes again, Does anyone have an extra motor they would like to sell ? just in case, Chris | ||

Good for you. What shape is the cord in? You may have to replace that. | ||

So glad you got it Chris, and what dedication to take two plane trips and a roadee home with the goods. Relieved that the smoke was only bug dust and nothing serious. Amazed at the way these WP/KM conventionals just fire up and go; this has happened four times for me. Interested about the toggle switch. Normally, you ignite the motor by turning the dial to HOLD, aka, stay on, or to a minute number like 10. From about the mid-to-late fifties onward, depending on the brand, all MOL & TOL wringers had timers. Only the BOL's and all Maytags remained motor switch free--you plug it it and varooom. A couple corrections: only the hotrod convertible ;'D open-top wringers got the Surgomatic designation; and for some unstated reason, Whirlpool did not make wringers in 1964. Was it Beatlemania LOL? The LMW's are from 1965. I have the service manual for machines built from '61-'71, and on page 2, the Table of Contents reads: "Note: 1964 Models Were Never Produced." John, maybe you or and equally adept Whirlpoolean like Glenn can find out why. | ||

Yeah when you plug it in it doesnt fire up until you hit the switch by the drain hose? maybe someone added it after the fact. I need to find a replacement dial for the bell on the front, I though about replacing the labels with the blue whirlpool ones, same design just blue instead of black stickers to freshen it up some.
I have a kenmore straight vane agitator but its about an inch too short for the post, it sticks up above the bottom of the tub, But its so quiet cant even hear it run.. Im going to paint it tomorrow and fix the leak in the hose underneath. | ||

Yours has a similar look to my 1948 Kenmore. I have to turn the timer on for power to it and it even still lights up when on.
