Hi all - HERLP! First post here, and looking to figure out if worth fixing, then how-to. It's a KitchenAid Dishwasher Model # KUDI01FLWH2 (mfr date 2003) and Serial# FP4001726. I'm in Miami.
It stopped working a while ago and I've just been washing dishes by hand. :( I've got a bum hand now due to stitches, and really need a working machine so I called one appliance repair guy (I've used him before), but he says he doesn't do motherboard work (I guess that's his conclusion without seeing it - so i'm putting it here so you all give me your thoughts). Below are the symptoms. I called another guy and he said he remembers a fire hazard class action on some of these, so to check the recall website and get back to him. And yes, my Model does fall in the affected lot, but its way past the 2016 deadline to get much of any rebate. So I'm trying to figure out - How much should I expect it to cost to repair (and is that adviseable, whether done by me or a professional - meaning are these parts gonna just fail again)?

Here's the symptoms:
1. It has 3 cycles, and the 2 I used to use, Heavy and Normal, just don't start, and no little green light comes on next to those 22 buttons either. The 3rd cycle button, "Rinse Only" remains dimly lit but doesn't start a rinse cycle if pressed. It will turn off momentarily if you try pressing either of the Option buttons (Hi-Temp and Energy Saver / Lock), but no action.
2.The only lights I can get to fully illuminate by pressing either Energy Save / Lock or Cancel (this ironically will turn on - which is encouraging - as if to drain any standing water, although there is no water, and turns off after the usual 1-2 minutes of running).
3. The door balance pulley that helps you close the door and prevents the door from falling fast has been broken a long time. Part of me wonders if all the above can be caused by slight misalignment signaling to controls that the door isn't fully closed? I've tried seeing if there's any wiggle movement in the closed position, but there doesn't seem to be. And I can't tell where the closing sensors are anyway. So I just mention this last item #3 in case folks have seen a pulley fail lead to the control panel failing to engage a wash cycle.
4. Prices for parts are: Motherboard/control panel $250, User Interface (the top panel with the buttons $150, Ribbon cable $83, Fuse kit $20. on AppliancePArtsPros.com they show repair to the Motherboard OR Interface, but hopefully not both. And I think the ribbon cable and fuse are mentioned only needing replacement if they look in bad shape. One person replaced a fuse kit only, and was lucky to have the least expensive repair. www.appliancepartspros.co...

Since s I see that APP website above says most of this is fixed in under 60min, what would u expect a repair person to charge to fix this?

Finally, for comparison, a comparable top-controls new Kitchenaid dishwasher (white not available, so stainless) runs about $850-900 plus $150 for install and $30 for install kit. I could go with a cheaper brand, but wanted to give an apples-to-apples model for cost comparison reasons.

THANKS in advance for your all's helping me figure this out.

I can't offer much in trouble shooting this model, but one quick thought - have you reset the breaker for the DW?  Occasionally killing the power for 15 minutes or a few hours will reset things.  Worth a try.

Busted button?

In your first picture, it looks like the top surface of the button has been pierced or broken. Any amount of moisture that might have gotten into the membrane switch could be enough to give you the symptoms you describe. Since the machine does work on the cancel part of the program, then all the things like the door latch switch, motor and thermal fuse are functioning.

I would give a new membrane switch a try and see if you can revive the machine that way.

As far as a replacement machine goes, all the newer ones take much longer than yours to complete any cycle. But remember that Whirlpool and Kitchenaid machines are nearly identical in design and you would be just a s happy with a Whirlpool which has similar cycle choices as your current machine. And they cost a lot less money. I have been satisfied with the 1 hour wash cycle on the Whirlpools. It actually cleans and dries well. Much better drying than the quick clean cycle on my KUDP02IRWH1 Kitchenaid which is the next model year up from yours and a few more cycles.
You can probably find the keypad on ebay for less that what APP wants for it.
