I’ve never seen a Maytag dryer quite like this...

Is this some sort of a commercial variant?

Maytag DE-90 and DG-90

No it was a basic dryer that MT dealers could advertise a low come-on price on and because there was no matching washer for it.

It was only a little cheaper because it was the same as the next model in the line-up in terms of features and quality, few were sold but they pop up once in a while  It is sort of like the basic wringer-washer they used to sell, Maytag being more expensive than most other laundry appliances had a hard time competing on the low price end of things.

Basically a DE306 but without the slightly more fancy Maytag control panel. This uses a similar wiring diagram to the DE306 since swestoyz sent me a wiring diagram for the DE306 and DG306 on messenger when I converted my DG606 into a DG306 timed drying dryer last year.

Too bad they didnt make a matching washer to go with it. i think that would make for a pretty interesting set, as i have a soft spot for Maytag Commercial Laundry Equipment
