Looking purchase used gas dryer
Decided after reading lots here to go with 29" Whirlpool (roper etc)

Some appear to have moisture senor and some don't. Which to prefer?
Best years to buy?

Should we buy a new gas dryer how good are the Whirlpool 29" gas dryers these days.

Any suggestions welcome.

I have a new Amana (Whirlpool built) 29" electric dryer that came with my new home and it works very well. Has all the cycles I need
or want.

Go with any of the Whirlpool, Maytag or Amana dryers. I don't think you will go wring. The 29" dryer has been in production for over 50 years now .

Thanks I didn't know Maytag and Amana made the 7.0 cu. ft. also.
I will research that more.

the Maytag MDX655 or MDC465 (gas or electric) 29 in models my suggestion. They may have Maytag or Amana on the brand, but they're all Whirlpool made.

Do you think the new Maytag MDX655, MDC465 or new Whirlpool 29" models would be as reliable as 29" units built 10 - 15 yrs. ago?

I'm not going to speculate on that. Maybe John L (Combo52) will comment. But given there are no electronics involved in either of these models except for the sensor inside the dryer drum, they should turn out to be quite reliable.

Any new dryer (or washer or whatever appliance) bought today probably won't be as "robust" as a comparable unit bought 20+ years ago ... but the entire industry is as such due to reductions for market price-points.  It is what it is and the consumer takes his chances with anything.  Seems reasonable to go with a design that has a long-term history.

Is this online? I need a picture to figure out how old they are. Kenmore 700 series goes all the way back to early to mid 1960s.

A good solid dryer. The lint screen is inside near the drum and not on the top. The od original WP dryers always had the lint screen access on top of the cabinet.

Dryer could be anywhere from late 1990s through 2012 in age.

Yes, the lint screen is on top. See the flap and handle? Control panel looks just great! And the masonite cut-out to protect the top is great! I'd buy it for that price!

Greg, you're saying the Kenmore does have the lint screen on top? I can't see it, picture isn't big enough for me and I cannot enlargen it.

Dumb question:
Owner has no NG to try dryer.
Is it OK to run a little with no gas?

Yes, you can run it without the gas line hooked up and recommended to make sure the motor works, the drum turns and the blower is making wind. While running the dryer, remove the sight plug and confirm the igniter glows. If it does and everything else checks out, the machine should be in good working order.

Is it safe to build a dryer pedestal out of wood for gas dryer?

Drum is lower than old Maytag.
5 back surgeries makes it tough to get that low.

Curiosity:
Which photo below appear to be OEM Whirlpool drum rollers?
Which type would you recommend?

Assuming you got the WP LGQ9858PW0 linked above on Facebook Marketplace ... it's a 2004 (P) model-year, manufactured 36th week of 2005 (serial MS36).

Dryer doing well. Thanks again for the help.
This 29" Whirlpool drys little quicker and blows more air that old Maytag DG312.
The old Maytag is much heavier I notice when moving.

Building A Pedestal For A Gas Dryer

combo52's profile picture

Out of wood.

It should be fine, gas dryers are designed to sit on combustable floors, do be sure the four feet that come with the dryer are in place however.

The electric WP 29" dryers are much hotter on the bottom than the gas ones, When we move them to service you often see floor damage under the left rear corner where the heater is.

"5 back surgeries makes it tough to get that low."

"The electric WP 29" dryers are much hotter on the bottom than the gas ones, When we move them to service you often see floor damage under the left rear corner where the heater is."

A couple of questions to maybe make a general "rule of thumb". I'm thinking that Bebop and I probably aren't the only ones with back problems...

Given the second quote above, do electric dryers in general run hotter on the floor than gas? I assume that despite floor damage, all electric dryers are theoretically safe to run on a combustible floor. If I'm wrong, please correct me!

Can one locate the elements and assume that heat to the floor is not an issue if the elements are x number of inches off the floor makes heat not a concern? I assume that the airflow as designed is theoretically sufficient.

Can one take 4x4's and cut them maybe 4" long and use those as feet to raise the dryer? Although I'm wondering about vibration...

Sorry, I woke up in a literal/nerdy/analytic mood this morn and am letting it run wild here......

Electric And Gas WP built Dryers Are SAFE to Run On

combo52's profile picture

Wood Flooring.

What we have seen is vinyl flooring often discolors from heat, we often see this under WP built 29" electric dryers and also under a lot of refrigerators under the compressor, I dough that it ever gets hot enough to cause a fire.
