I would say an early 80’s model in coffee. I would like to have the gas version of one of these but I’ve never seen one before.

Would there have even been a "gas" portable dryer?

Yes but I don’t believe they had a long run and we’re probably discontinued by the mid 80’s.

Gas portable dryer

Ohhh yes!

Saw one on fleaPay (or was it CL) years ago now. Think it was Whirlpool, but may have been Kenmore badged, cannot recall.

Those gas compact dryers are still out there if one is patient and looks carefully.

Obviously not portable due to gas connections, but more of compact space saving sort of thing that gave better results than their 120v cousins.

One time I saw a Whirlpool full height 24” gas dryer pop up for sale here in Southern California and I was going t9 get it early last year but they sold before I even contacted the seller. Yes, the Whirlpool/Kenmore 24” full height dryers do exist but are rare and I don’t think Whirlpool made very many and didn’t sell very many of them since it’s the same capacity as the compact dryers and had the lint filter in the back as well.

Gas 24" WP-KM Compact Dryers

combo52's profile picture

These were built from the late 60s till sometime in the early 2000s, after that you could only get the gas 24" dryer as a part of the 24" Thin-Twin.

I have at least 4 used gas compact dryers, including one KM version that was never used if someone wants to buy one, mostly almond maybe one or two white ones.

If you use a flex-line with quick disconnect like you use on an outdoor gas grill the dryer can be used as a portable, I even had a customer lift the top burner out of her older Roper gas range and attach a hose to the orifice and hang the vent hose out the window of the apartment she rented to dry laundry.

Thanks for the info John. I didn’t realize they made the gas versions into the 21st century.

Only reason can see for full height 24" dryer was as a mate to washing machine for those who wanted a matched set.

Thanks to a kind gentleman on this site, I have a Whirlpool LG4931XTW0 in my laundry room. When I installed it, I had to adapt the gas line down to the smallest black pipe at the hardware store. The little guy does a good job. Only thing is I wish it was time-temp or sensor.

Like their electric heated cousins

These compact or portable dryers predate mandated senors on basically all dryers IIRC.

Mine is electric, but even with puny 120v/1450 watts of heating power will get the job done. It is maddening sometimes to keep having go and either check for dryness, and or reset after stopping if things aren't dry. Small price to pay for avoiding laundromat dryers routinely so that's me for you.....

Wish there was a way to turn off end of cycle buzzer. Sound of thing can wake the dead, not exactly the conducive to doing late night laundry.

The Whirlpool built gas compact dryers definitely dry faster than the one I have since it’s 120 volts with a 1450 watt heat output and mine usually takes 60 to 70 minutes to dry a load of laundry from my Kenmore portable washer. It’s a lot faster since I replaced the thermostat from a full size 29” dryer since the one that was on there when I got it was weak and worn out wand wouldn’t get any hotter than 110F or 115F and works much better since I replaced the high limit thermostat.

In the Early 2000s The DOE mandated automatic dryness

combo52's profile picture

Sensing and shut-off, and since 120 dryers do not get hot enough to use the time-temperature shut off system WP installed electronic dryness sensor systems in these compact 120 volt dryers and in the 120 volt 24" Thin Twins.

Every year we run into about a dozen 120 TTs that were purchased by mistake, when I go out on a service call people often are complaining how slow the dryer is and there is usually a 240 volt outlet already behind the machine, so I have converted at least 50 of these 120 volt TTs over the years by changing the heater element and adding a heavy cord, then the customer has an electronic sensor 24" dryer.

I could easily add the ES to one of the compact gas dryers we have that I would like to sell if someone wanted one.
