I was browsing Facebook market place yesterday morning and stumbled across these beauties! The owner bought a house from an estate and these came with the house! He bought the house from the former owner’s grandson who said his grandma had purchased these new and used them until the day she died. He thought they were way too cool to get rid of so he kept them. He had planned on using them but his wife said no so in the garage they went, they even went with them on a move to a bigger house to accommodate their 3 kids. Realizing they were only going to sit in his garage and never get used, he decided he needed the space more than he needed them so he decided to sell them.
The exterior of these machines is in shockingly great shape. Hardly any rust on the cabinet or corrosion on the chrome. I don’t think Grandma used the dryer much. The interior is quite pristine! I haven’t been able to wire up the dryer yet, in time I think. I want to focus on the washer! The console light on the washer clicks on with ease. No flickering! Maybe she didn’t know it was there. It’s clear that she used the washer once you get a look at the basket. However, look closely at the agitator. I think this must’ve been rebuilt at some point. The agitator is black polypropylene with a set screw! IIRC, didn’t this machine come with a Bakelite agitator and a slightly slower wash speed? Is it possible that she actually had a new transmission put in? The whole wash unit seems to sit lower than I’m used to seeing. Roughly a 3/4in gap to the underside of the top panel. Seems the water level switch was also replaced at some point! I’m still working on cleaning the washer up. I need to put a new drain hose on, the old one cracked in half as soon as I touched it. I find the power cord connection directly below the inlet valve rather amusing. Looks like the lid switch might be bypassed already... or it’s just stuck in its little cubby hole. I’ll check the tub to pump hose and the belts and see where I am in terms of being able to fire it up. Look like the left lid bumper needs a replacement. It was replaced by some small piece of rubber held in place with what appears to be silicone. The bleach dispenser/bumper combo on the right seems to be in decent shape. | ||

That's a beautiful set. Maytag always had a nice shade of Turquoise. It looks like they had really rusty water. Hope you can get the tub back to white again. | ||

Congrats on saving a nice vintage pair of maytags. The best advice I have is to tear them down and perform some maintenance on these machines if you want them to last for years to come. There are several threads if you search this site for what needs to be done with a Maytag set of this vintage to go into regular use again.

I just want to add a bit more.
As you already noted the tub is well worn. You’ll want to find a replacement for that at some point and they can be had from certain much newer machines. Overloading, as you likely already know, is the typical reason for wear of this sort. Your Bakelite agitator has been replaced with a plastic Power Fin, but that doesn’t mean anything. I’ve seen several Bakelite agitators with cracks up the side of the barrel which would be cause for replacement, but it may also have been replaced with the Power Fin to improve performance. Most on this blog will tell you the Power Fin is a better design. I have these same models in yellow and I also have a black Power Fin. When I first got my machines I purchased replacements for all of the switches whenever they turned up on eBay, but they turned up so often that I had to stop. I had too many of each, so I doubt you’ll have any trouble finding the correct load size selector. The part number is 201754 and one is listed on eBay now, but you may be able to find it cheaper somewhere else. These machines of yours are a truly remarkable find in this condition. Fortune was certainly smiling on you the day that you found that listing.

If the problem was just the rust colored stains you’d be absolutely right, but if you look carefully at the lower portions of the tub you’ll see that the porcelain is worn away due to overloading. At this point even when cleaned up that part of the tubs surface is abrasive and will damage clothing if used this way. His best bet now is a newer replacement.

Badly Worn Wash basket In An Early 60S MT Not likely caused by overloading, More likely a bad agitator design had fins that were much too close to the wash basket OR a white porcelain finish that was not durable enough for the application.
When you look at the hundreds of later 06 MTs that have put in over 50 years of service and you never see this problem, so it is either the agitator or the tubs finish.
I also dough that the little old lady that took such great care of this beautiful turquoise MT wash a chronic over-loader, LOL

Actually think have one of those agitators lying about somewhere with filter/detergent dispenser. Was purchased to use with my Maytag wringer, but it was incorrect design and didn't have spline. Seller made amends by sending along NOS spline but don't have tools nor time and patience to bother.

Jamie - what a great save and wonder addition to your collection! The hard part is taken care of with the minty porcelain and cabinets, the rest can be addressed with replacement parts.
John is spot on that the original agitator design is probably what ended up dulling many of the original tubs on these, even going back to the AMP models. Be on the lookout for a stacked digital control set from the mid to late 80's. Perfect donors for a minty white tub, otherwise finding another pre-06 tub will take time and use the set-screw agitator that came with the machine. These are the best replacement for worn out or broken bakelite agitators. While you have the tub out pull the stem and inspect the agitator shaft. If worn you'll want to find a donor transmission top half from a 70's center dial. The trans on the 80's models uses a different top half/gear set in case you want to retain the slower agitation speed. The lid switch mechanism on the 00/02 series machines is different than the later 06/07/08 lid switch/out of balance mechanism, and can get gummed up. Best to take it all apart, clean, and reinstall per the instructions in the red service manual. Lid bumpers are still available new from Whrilpool - 212716. The damper pads on these pre 06 machines are a different material than the later poly pads. A member here made this discovery when restoring a highlander earlier this year. You may want to pull the whole assembly, clean, and lube with molycote. I may have a bleach dispenser and the correct buttons for your water level pressure switch. Shoot me a PM if you're interested.
