I am now the owner of the 1963 Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII that was for sale in San Diego for over a year. I believe it’s a Imperial Mark XII since it says Mark XII on the control panel of the timer. Looked over everything on this machine and did a couple of quick test cycles and it works! The bearing will need replacing in the future but everything seems to be working as it should with no strange sounds or noises.

Thanks Bob! Everything seems to work just fine on this washer and in case if anyone is wondering the timer is just like a Lady Kenmore washer from that era, you select which cycle you want turn the timer until it stops and push to start. When the manual button is pressed in it allows you to set the timer anywhere without having to chose one of the cycle buttons.

We had that exact same machine (in white) when I was growing up.  Enjoy!

Beautiful Pair Sean

combo52's profile picture

We have the same set one year newer in white with Suds-Miser, and the dryer is gas with a window.

By 1964 WP had added the Magic-Clean filter and a 3 speed motor, they had also beefed up the transmission and went to a 1/2 HP motor in 1964.

I just wish ours were the cool color yours are.

I took our washer all apart for rebuilding a few years ago and it needs to be reassembled, hopefully in the next year or so we are going to do another WP-KM BD rebuild-A-thon where we are going th rebuild 10-20 BD washers over a week or so.

...had this set in white but it was the next model down from MKVII. Lighted portion looked the same as these but the cycle selection was manual and just 5 pushbuttons for temperature selection on both the washer and dryer.

I think this was rebuilt at some point since it has a newer pump, and the belt looks fairly new as well and it doesn’t make any strange or funky sounds and it goes through all the cycles like it should. When I picked them up from Strictlybojack on Saturday he said they were used all the way until 2005, and the 1962 RCA Whirlpool LAJ70 my friend Tyler acquired was in service from 1962 to all the way up to 2014 and that Whirlpool has seen more use than my new Whirlpool washer from 1963

Thanks Vacorator! Will try to get phots of the matching dryer later this week. Won’t be able to use it since the blower belt is toast and the drum belt will more than likely will need to be replaced but that shouldn’t be too difficult to find since it’s the same drum belt as the current Whirlpool 29” dryers

Mine is identical to the one in Who’s Minding The Store except that Whirlpool dryer is more than likely is a gas model since it has the lower access panel on it

It's really nice Sean. Whirlpool used that box on the side with parallel rows of buttons for a few years before moving the buttons to one long roll on top. Akronman has one from around your vintage, too. I think Greg has one as well. Mark XII's are mazing washing machines.

I thought this Whirlpool washer when Strictlybojack created a thread about it a year ago was a Imperial model but turns out it’s a Imperial Mark XII since it says Mark XII on the control panel of the timer. The 3 speed Mark XII machines came out in 1964 and 1965 I believe since the Lady Kenmore washers in 1965 had a 3 speed motor and the Mark XII was the Whirlpool version of the Lady Kenmore in 1965

Yes, I knew yours was a Mark XII, like Gansky's, Akronman's & mine, each one from a different year. I don't know the chronology. Glenn does. I believe that Greg said mine is a 66; it has 3 speeds: last button on the right gives the lowest speed. Would have preferred the Waterfall Magic Mix Filter to the Magic Clean, but that's life. Good luck with your new friend, Mark, and good on the Bojack Man for finding another rare vintage treasure.

My friend Richard (speedqueen) has a 1965 RCA Whirlpool Imperial dryer but I think his 1965 Whirlpool Imperial dryer at one point in time was paired up with a Mark XII washer but the washer it was paired up with is long gone unfortunately. I believe I am the first to have a 1963 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII since I’ve seen no others in the archives

Both Lady Kenmore and WP Imperial Mark 12 came out with 3 speed motors with their 1964 models.

Hi Sean, the drum belt you need for the matching dryer is not the same as 1966 and later WP built dryers, it is both a different length and profile. I do have new drum belts for this dryer if you want, get in touch.

What's the model number of the dryer?

It may be an Imperial instead of an Imperial Mark XII ... being that it doesn't state so on the console like the washer.

It doesn't have thermostatic auto-dry (aka Moisture Minder) ... which may not have yet been available at that time, or may have been a step-up feature for the Mark XII.

8900 is an Imperial.  The Mark XII washer is 992, or 9-something.

Still wondering if thermostatic autodry was available in 1963.

Not sure if auto dry was around in some dryers but timed drying was still main stream in most dryers in the 1960’s

Interesting thing is when I went through this dryer yesterday someone took all of the light bulbs out of it and only left the ozone light in for some reason. I cleaned all of the lint out of this dryer yesterday and even cleaned out the heating element plenum while I had the dryer apart yesterday evening. There was some burnt lint inside the heating element housing but not very much but I cleaned it out while I had everything apart.

I ordered a new blower belt for my new 1963 Whirlpool Imperial dryer and it should be here by this Friday. Will definitely try it out this weekend and will try drying a couple of loads of laundry in it to see how it does. Should work fine since it’s a Whirlpool 29” dryer

29" WP Built Dryers

combo52's profile picture

WP built dryers from 1949-1965 were all good sturdy machines, BUT they tended to be slow and use more energy than the redesigned 29" dryers that came out in 1966.

Hi Sean, your electric MT HOH dryer may even dry faster than this 63 WP even with its 800 watt larger element than the MTs 4800 watt element, it will be a close contest, your gas HOH dryer will likely loose the speed test with the electric 63 WP.

My gas HOH will still be my primary daily use dryer but I will be using the ‘63 Whirlpool dryer to dry laundry every now and again. I will definitely be using the ‘63 Whirlpool dryer with the UV light to dry my mother’s work clothes since a couple of people at her work tested positive for covid-19 and I want to make sure all bacteria and viruses are killed off just to be safe

When I put the new fan belt on, I don’t see the part that moves the belt to the other pulley and didn’t see any remains of it when cleaning it out the other day. Hopefully I can source a replacement part soon for it. The normal and super speed will sort of work but it would change the air output from the blower/fan

It looks fine, it looks like you have the belt on the wrong side of the shifter, the motor needs to be running when you shift speeds.

I have a restored 1965 WP Mark 12 gas dryer, if need be I could take a picture of the blower shifter.

That's a beautiful set, Sean, congrats! Whirlpool Mark X11 is one of my all-time top favorites. You may just like the Imperial dryer enough to let it be your daily driver. I have the Maytag HOH dryer hooked up with the 160 washer and almost never use that dryer.

I remember seeing a few Mark XIIs as a kid, always wanted one. Now I have three.

The 61 in yellow, 69 Woody and 66 gas dryer. Still working on completing a set :-)

I guess I’ll have to look more into what it’s not turning on. The drum and ozone light come on when you turn the timer but doesn’t do anything when you press the temperature buttons since the start buttons are combined with the temperature options. Strictlybojack said it ran when he tested it but it’s not wanting to work for me. Could be a loose connection somewhere and I am getting power since the drum and ozone light come on

The rear part of the belt shifter is broken off. I can technically still get a normal and super speed drying temps on it but it won’t shift the belt to the other pulley and reducing the air output from the blower/fan

Easy Two Speed Spindrier

First post here, new to the group. Wondering if anyone knows the exact year of this old Easy Two Speed Spindrier. Very clean, and everything works. Grabbed it from Aunt Edna's basement a few years ago with some plans to use it, but now would like to sell to someone who can appreciated it. I haven't seen a thread about Easy spindriers on here since 2018 so sorry if this was wrong place to post...J

Not sure what the exact year of you Easy machine is but my guess would be late 50’s. Don’t know very much about Easy machines since I have no experience with them but there are a few other people on this site that know more about them. Only machines I have experience and are familiar with is Maytag and Whirlpool belt drive machines along with a Whirlpool direct drive I once owned 3 years ago and those are all the machines I have experience with using

That Easy Spindry . . .

. . . is the most fun washer to use.  I had one I loved for years, but the pump bit the dust and I had no way to replace it.  Gave the machine to Tyler and he found a pump.  Hope he's enjoying using the Easy.

The older style of wig wag is a bit louder than the newer style of wig wag that came out sometime in the mid to late 60’s but it definitely gives this machine character.

Took the pump off of my ‘63 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII washer (in the process of a refurbishment process) and the pump is much newer than I thought it would be. Looks like it could have possibly had the belt and pump replaced sometime in 1998 since there is a date of 2/3/98 on the drain pump

you need to kick up the action/performance a bit with a wider belt.....

That is something I might consider but I am leaving it the way I found it. Don’t want to try to hot rod it and something ends up breaking. I will be ordering a new belt so that should help the washing performance a little.

63 WP Washer Tear Down

combo52's profile picture

Hi Sean, it does not look too bad, you should not need new bearings, maybe a new spin tube, although if you use double top seals on both the agitator shaft and spin tube you should be OK, what does the top of the agitator shaft look like ?

If you clean it up and you will get lots of use and many years out of this washer.

Hi John, I got a picture of the agitator shaft and this is the older style since it doesn’t have the splines in it like the later Whirlpool belt drive washers use. Maybe I’ll need a spin tube but I’ll have to look into it once I get the basket drive off tomorrow.

Did Whirlpool use the same upper seals on the direct drive washers? I believe you mentioned that Whirlpool used the same seals and bearings on the direct drive washers but I am just double checking just to be sure.

Used the same inner and outer diameter seals for the spin tube and the agitator shaft, there were several different styles used over the 70 years these two machines were in production but they are completely interchangeable.

All it does is move the belt to the other side of the pulley reducing the air output. I’ve manually switched the belt to the other side of the pulley and it does reduce the air output and certainly makes the dryer a bit quieter but it doesn’t work since a part of the belt shifter is busted off and doesn’t do anything at all. One of these days I’ll look into a replacement belt shifter but it still works by reducing the heat output but not the blower/fan air output.

Reduced airflow rate helps avoid lightweight items such as lingerie from getting pulled/stuck to the exhaust port in the drum.

Got the outer tub out, and this is what the baseplate looks like after a quick wipe down. Seems to be in good shape and there is some rust on the left front of the base plate but that’s more than likely from someone overfilling the bleach dispenser since the bleach and fabric softener dispensers are right above that area of the baseplate. Plan on putting POR15 on that area of the baseplate and the rest of the inside of the cabinet to prevent it from developing any rust in the future.

So does this dryer have 2 tumbling speeds? I thought moving the belt made the drum tumble slower & faster, depending which pulley the belt was on?

Not 2 speed tumbling but a 2 speed air output. With a lower air output, items tend to not get pulled towards the exhaust outlet as easily and is ideal for delicate fabrics. Will also make the dryer more quiet since the exhaust fan/blower is running a lower speed as opposed to the high speed.

I like the idea

of 2 speeds: high-speed for sturdy cottons and everyday fabrics, and low-speed for knits, synthetics and delicates. Would this apply for heat too?

Yes, the gentle speed has the 4500 watt output and the normal speed has the 5600 watt output. The high heat temperature will still work on the gentle speed but will take longer to reach 160F as opposed to the normal speed drying temperature. I will experiment to see how well the gentle speed dries things such as sheets compared to the normal speed drying temperature.

FSP Whirlpool part, that has been obsolete for quite awhile now. I would suggest checking on eBay from time to time, or simply make one yourself. As long as the tube seals against the tub, and is the same approximate height and diameter, it should work.

Another update

maytag85's profile picture
There was a good used transmission on eBay that was too cheap to pass up since it was only $44.00. Only things I had to do was add oil and transfer the original wig wag and cam bars on to the newer transmission since the cam bars that were on the transmission were bent which more than likely was from shipping. Not sure what the new-err transmission is from but more than likely from the early to mid 80’s.

Sean, I really enjoyed the video. When you introduced the selected cycle, you simple said cycle #3, medium wash temp and wash for 8 minutes. My suggestion is to tell us what the cycle name is on the panel of the Whirlpool for each cycle you run. I like ou said you want to try and video each different wash cycle.

I plan on reinstalling the transmission sometime in the near future after it’s all rebuilt but I’ll keep it on hand in the meantime in case if the transmission that’s in it develops a problem. The machines I am using at the moment are my 1973 May A606 and DG306 along with my Kenmore portable belt drive washer and my ‘63 Whirlpool has been running reliably but the water level switch decided to start acting up and that machine should be up and going as soon as the new water level switch arrives for it and it should be here by the end of next week.

Is the spin clutch grabbing too much?  Should spin acceleration cause the strain and mechanism slow-down seen at 27:30 and 38:15?

It’s the one retainer clip on the clutch yoke that can be causing that and I’ve adjusted the clutch a dozen times and it’s adjusted to 2/16” rather than the 1/16” the Whirlpool repair master suggests. You’ll notice zip ties on the clutch yoke and I had to put those zip ties on to help hold down the clutch yoke so it doesn’t engage abruptly. Hopefully the issues with the clutch will be corrected once the original transmission is all rebuilt and that uses a small spring or some sort of retainer clip that holds down the clutch yoke.

Spin Clutch Is Grabbing Too Much, Reply # 97

combo52's profile picture

Good eye Glenn, It is almost impossible to get a BD WP washer to engage and accelerate properly with the old style full face asbestos clutch lining.

WP changed to the 3 pad clutches around 1968 and eliminated this problem, I never rebuild a WP BD machine without switching to this better clutch design, they just work so much better because it allows the belt [ and water pump ] to keep turning at full speed as the wash basket gets up to speed, this improvement is what kept later WP BD washers from suds-locking after the wash cycle.

Maybe I’ll look into getting that Coppertone Maytag A806 set sometime soon but am limited on space at the moment. I will have to sell my Maytag A810 set and will have to part out the Maytag DE306 since I took all the wiring out of it for the DG306 I got up and going again back in 2019 and it’s not in terrible shape just needs to have new wiring put in it and needs a upper door hinge since the upper hinge seems to have disappeared on me and last time I saw it was in my garage back in 2019.

Everything seems to be working as it should on that 1963 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII but one thing I had to replace recently was the water level switch and spent some time to adjust it but seems to not do a partial drain on the super wash and it does drain out some water but not a partial drain like it did with the original water level switch. I have a pressure switch in my parts stash from a old Maytag and maybe I’ll put that on but I’ll have to see if it will work or not.

Now here’s another issue I am having. I got a new water level switch installed and it works but it doesn’t really seem to do the partial drain on the super wash cycle and only drains about 1/4 of the water instead of 1/2 of the water.

Water level switches are adjustable but I put in another water level switch and it does the same thing. I am beginning to think it’s the piece I made out of pvc pipes and I might have to cut it down to see if that will correct the issue I am having with it not doing the proper partial drain on the super wash cycle.

How did you source the part?  There can be differences in the reset point from one switch to another.  I recall that some have a variable reset point that moves up/down with the selected level.  Others have a fixed reset point.  Some may have an adjustment for it, maybe some don't.

I figured it out. Turns out the parts I made for the water level switch that is on the side of the tub was a bit on the tall side and I cut it down little by little and now it works like it’s supposed to. Only thing left I have to do is do the screw adjustment since it doesn’t quite fill to the top but I’ll do that sometime tomorrow since it’s dark outside.

What do the "manual" over dial do?
Transmission: you probably purchased the transmission from the same seller I purchased mine, he had a bunch on sale for that price.
Though yours looks much better than what I got and I was told he would send the best one he had.
I also got the camshafts bented in shipping but I straightened them using a hammer.
As for oil I didn't add any to it, thought , should I have?

I definitely would have added oil to it and if you don’t add oil and use it for many years the transmission can lock up and the transmission on my Kenmore portable belt drive washer was for sure locked up when I got it and added 40 weight oil and brought it back to life (yes, 40 weight motor oil isn’t the correct oil but it’s what I had in hand at the time) and has been working fine for the 4 years I’ve owned it.

I am doing a quote “rebuild” or the original transmission that was in my 1963 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII and all I am really doing is cleaning things up, installing a new agitator shaft and agitator shaft seal and spring, putting some fresh new 50 weight motor oil in and putting it back together.

My old one locked up because of water damage.
Still have to open it and I know the more I wait the worse will be.
I also will have to replace the shaft but again I plan to move so... Whatever I will leave will probably just not be used so would be "wasted work".
I imagined that the transmission I got already had oil in it and I didn't see any considerable spill in the package, but thinking of it probably it's because it needs it.
I can add some through the vent perhaps. With a syringe or something the next time I open the back
How much did you add?

I’d adjust a little oil at a time and told put a paper clip in to measure how much oil is in the transmission. John Lefever/combo52 will know since he’s worked on hundreds of belt drive washers.

Okay thanks. I will ask john even though I think I bothered him enough already! haha
I seem to remember reading something about it in the past, I seem to recall it should be half full. But will ask to confirm.
And I recall 60w oil, you say 50w.
Anyway I suppose it would work just fine the same.
Probably heavier is better for transmissions that are pretty worn I guess.

Over here in Europe there are still tons of cars with manual clutch and they all use 75w gear oil so I ask if that could go well?
Something like this?
