I have a 1962 GE Spacemaker TC469WB refrigerator I am looking to rehome. I am heartbroken that we have to part with it as it is the very BEST refrigerator I have ever owned and is absolutely beautiful in my mid-century kitchen! We are very sad it has come to this, but we cannot find an ethical, skilled repair person that we can rely on to fix the problems that crop up with a vintage appliance. At this point, we have come to the realization that the refrigerator belongs with someone who has the expertise to repair it themselves or someone who has found a skilled repair person that they trust who can fix it.

Mechanical Condition: The fridge has a brand new compressor, fan motor, and rewired relay. I have included a copy of this bill in the photos. Unfortunately, the fridge now requires a defrost timer and my repairman has disappeared, so it is not operational at this point.

Aesthetic condition: The condition is quite good in terms of aesthetics, but not perfect with scratches and dings from nearly 60 years of use. It has a smooth white exterior with real chrome detailing on the outside, as well as an anodized aluminum snowflake pattern on the front of the bottom pull-out freezer. The interior of the refrigerator is an aqua color with original pivoting shelves, two fresh food drawers, two condiment shelves on the door, an egg keeper, and a butter keeper. The freezer has two roomy pull out wire bins for tons of frozen food and has a very convenient roll out top shelf for ice cube trays and frozen juice. The original ice cube trays are included. The fridge is 18.8 cu. ft, is 67 inches tall and 33.25 inches wide. I will also include the vintage GE Service Manual for this model that I found on Amazon.

Problems: The large glass shelf that covers the fresh food bins is broken in half, but I have the two parts inserted and it still works to cover the bins. I have included a photo of the broken glass shelf. As I noted above, it needs a defrost timer, so it is nonoperational. However, before the defrost timer went out the refrigerator and the freezer worked beautifully. All in all, it is a gorgeous refrigerator that when working is really wonderful functionally.

We would like to get at least $600 to cover the cost of a new fridge that I found on sale, which is well below the amount of money we have put into it replacing the compressor. We will also entertain serious offers. The refrigerator is available for pickup in Lakewood, Co. If you are in the Denver metro area or are willing to make the trip to Colorado, we would be happy to show it to you. We are located in Lakewood, Colorado at the foot of Green Mountain. We are just a few minutes away from Red Rocks natural amphitheater. Colorado is a beautiful place to visit for a summertime mini-vacation. I am also willing to ship if you can arrange it through uShip or another freight service. I had a great experience with uShip when I bought a vintage stove out of state. You just post the item you want to be shipped on the uShip site and shippers bid on the job. You know exactly what you will be paying and you pay through uShip after the item is delivered. I found the prices to be extremely reasonable. So, if you are interested and can arrange to have it picked up and shipped to you, I am willing to ship. Please feel free to message or email me if you are interested. :) Thanks!

I’m sorry that you have to give up your beloved GE refrigerator. This is the fate a lot of times for vintage appliances. The ones who know how to work on them don’t want to anymore and the ones who weren’t born in the era of great appliances just tell you to get a new one.

That company that won’t return to work on it should be shamed. I tell my customers to tell all of their friends if they are satisfied or tell ME if they aren’t. But then again it’s just me and I built the business on customer service which is a rarity these days.

I sincerely hope you find a good home for your old friend!

Yes, it is a sad state of affairs that we have to part with the fridge. I really love it. The repairman who did the last, very expensive repairs will not return our calls. When trying to find someone else to repair the fridge on Angie's List, which was unsuccessful, I came across the reviews for this guy and most were not good. While he technically is an excellent repairman, he has been caught in lies and he and his staff have been verbally abusive to customers who are able to get in touch with them. I wish I would have known before spending $1600.00. Oh well, live and learn...

You can .....

use other defrost timers. The only issue is figuring out the wiring diagram and how to modify the old defrost plug/wires to accept the new defrost timer. If this was accomplished, then you would have to know someone who is a diy kind of person to perform the wire mod. If you knew of said diy guy, I can help you with procurement of replacement defrost timer and figuring out the wire mod. PM me if interested in discussing.

Hi shf074, Thanks for the suggestions! We do not know anyone who can work on it. I have spent three years and have gone through three repairmen. My husband is done with fooling with it and spending more money on it. In an effort to maintain harmony in our household, we have both agreed that it is time to part with the fridge.
