That freezer is woefully small, and more so due to ice maker taking up space. I'd have to have a separate deep freezer or something...

Looking at capacity of many freezer top fridges vintage and even modern can see why SXS units took off sales wise.

Early 70s 18CF FD

Freezer in about the same size as any modern 18 CF refrigerator-Freezer today, it is around 4 CF, the space where the IM was is fully usable and even when the IM was there the space taken up is about the same a a WP or GE ref with an IM.

 

You can see they took the IM out of this ref by the dangling wires, FD IMs were very problematic to put it nicely, it was very rare to see one than worked for more than a 1/2 dozen years without service calls.

I remember installing probably a hundred or so ice makers in those. Dad had a business relationship with a kitchen distributor that handled Frigidaire, among a few others.
